Sinopsis

How do people talk about words? This work explores naming constructions such as This formation is called a "coral reef" that are used to introduce lexicalized concepts like coral reef through metalinguistic reference. Drawing on the theoretical foundations in philosophy of language as well as recent work in semantics and pragmatics, experimental evidence from corpus analyses and psycholinguistic experiments-including self-paced reading and eye-tracking data-uncover the linguistic and cognitive processes behind these naming constructions. Special attention is given to the use and processing of quotational constructions during reading. Bridging (psycho)linguistics and philosophy of language, this interdisciplinary work offers new insights into how people use quotational constructions to talk about language, and how readers interpret and process naming constructions with and without quotation marks.

A Book About Books - Volume I of...

This book is Volume I of a three volume book plus accompanying website, www.bookaboutbooks.com, which adds to subjects already in the book or presents some books and subjects not contained in the books. The other volumes are available from the same booksellers as this volume. Note this 2024 publication date is a corrected version of the original version of this volume published in 2018.
A Book about Books discusses what nonfiction books and subjects the author believes are important to know about. This book tries to point to problems in how we live and to see if books have any answers. Even though the books are complete, the author will update the website periodically in the future.
    E. H. Bernstein is a former librarian turned author. The subtitle of the book describes the author's objective: "A handbook in three volumes to a choice of essential books, writers and subjects in order to understand the world we live in, about 'big questions' and possible answers, about books and writers that may improve people's lives, about neglected writers, and other books and subjects."
A Book about Books attempts to share what the author has learned from nearly 50 years of nonfiction reading and to provide the reader with samples of the most important authors and subjects from that reading.
While the book is based on research, it is intended to be a handbook or guide by trying to make that research understandable to the general reader and to students, and for teachers--by pointing to what the author believes is missing from today's education. A curriculum proposal for college teachers is on the website.
Note about how the volumes are related: each chapter is on a separate subject. So the chapters can be read individually, but the full message requires reading all the volumes. Volume I is important, but preliminary to the more important Volumes II and III. Note also that the book is not just about books, since other sources are also mentioned.
The author believes we should listen to many voices, so the book draws on many types of writers from different times and countries.
The author says: A contemporary writer once said that one of the purposes of writing is that books should be useful. I hope that my book will be of use.

The Age of Enlightened Despotism was a period in European history during the 18th century when absolute monarchs, inspired by the ideas of the Enlightenment, sought to combine their centralized power with reforms aimed at improving the welfare of their subjects. These rulers, often referred to as "enlightened despots," were influenced by the rationalist philosophy that emphasized reason, science, and progress. However, they did not embrace the democratic principles of the Enlightenment, opting instead to preserve their absolute authority while implementing select reforms to improve governance, society, and the economy.
At the heart of enlightened despotism was the belief that monarchs could act as benevolent rulers who used their absolute power to guide their countries towards prosperity and progress. These monarchs saw themselves as enlightened figures, tasked with leading their nations in line with the principles of the Enlightenment but without relinquishing control over the state. In contrast to traditional autocratic rulers, enlightened despots were often receptive to new ideas about governance, education, legal systems, and the treatment of their subjects. They embraced reforms that were designed to modernize their societies, often implementing policies that reflected Enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire, Montesquieu, and Rousseau.
Frederick the Great of Prussia, Catherine the Great of Russia, and Joseph II of Austria were the most prominent examples of enlightened despots. Each of these rulers used their power to implement a range of reforms. Frederick, for instance, was known for his military prowess and his efforts to modernize the Prussian state, introducing reforms that improved the legal system, promoted education, and supported religious tolerance.

Mankind is naturally evil and good. Ever since we became conscious, the evil within us emerged. Animals are not good or evil, they just follow the power of nature. We became aware of the differences and we continued regardless. No higher agent such as God can be blamed for the rise of darkness in our souls. Moral evil is caused by human activity.

It is argued that our love of darkness proves that there is no God. If God exists and is omnipotent and all-knowing and perfectly good then there would be no natural evil, but there is. Can we continue to blame God for the ways of mankind or is it time we accepted responsibility for our ways?

The truth is that we will not stop any time soon. In this book we examine the dark nature of mankind and the most gruesome and disturbing acts we have committed over time. From the holocaust to human sacrifices to false gods. No bloodstained stone will be unturned. Welcome to the Dark Side.

Freud examines the similarities and differences between the two mental states, and argues that delusions can be understood as a kind of waking dream. He also discusses the role of wish fulfillment in both dreams and delusions, and suggests that they both provide insight into the unconscious mind. Additionally, Freud analyzes specific cases of delusions, including religious delusions and paranoid delusions, and discusses their psychological significance. Overall, "Delusion and Dream" provides a thought-provoking examination of the workings of the human mind and the relationship between conscious and unconscious mental states. Read in English, unabridged.
