Summary

The Essential Works of Anthony Trollope is a compilation that showcases the remarkable literary contributions of one of the Victorian era's most prolific novelists. Famed for his astute observations of social issues and intricate characterizations, Trollope's works often explore themes of class, ambition, and personal morality, all framed within his distinctively rich and engaging prose. This anthology captures the essence of Trollope's enduring narratives, from the parliamentary intrigues of his 'Chronicles of Barsetshire' to the societal critiques found in 'The Way We Live Now', making it an invaluable resource for understanding both the complexities of Victorian society and Trollope's masterful storytelling techniques. Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) was not only a novelist but also a dedicated post-office worker, which deeply informed his insights into British life and bureaucracy. His diverse experiences, from working in the British civil service to embarking on extensive travels, equipped him with a keen sense of observation that permeated his fiction. The challenges he faced—including periods of financial instability—further motivated his exploration of class dynamics and the pursuit of personal ambition, themes central to his most celebrated works. This anthology is highly recommended for both seasoned readers of Victorian literature and newcomers alike, as it provides an essential gateway into Trollope's world. Readers will find themselves immersed in elegantly crafted stories that challenge societal norms while simultaneously delivering humor and profound human insights.

Katherine O'Flaherty was born on the 8th February 1850 in St Louis, Missouri to parents of French and Irish descent.
At age 5, she was sent to the Sacred Heart Academy and, apart from a 2 year period at home when her father died, remained there until graduating in 1868. Whilst there she began writing and became an avid reader of almost anything that crossed her path.
Kate married Oscar Chopin in 1870 and the couple moved to New Orleans, and later to the rural setting of Cloutierville, Louisiana to raise their 6 children.
In 1882 her husband died leaving her in a deep trench of debt. Despite her best efforts to turn the businesses around they were sold, and she moved the family back to St Louis and the financial help of her mother. Sadly, her mother died within the year. Kate, now struggling with depression, pushed herself to write and gained a local reputation as a writer of short stories that captured the local color and vibrancy of her surroundings.
By the early 1890’s her short stories were published nationally. With this widespread audience also came negative reviews, controversy, and cries of immorality as themes such as interracial relationships, the rights of women and other burning issues of the day were written about.
Despite the criticism, which unnerved her, she continued to write though in the main her works, around 100 short stories and two novels, were not attributed with any literary worth.
Kate Chopin died from a brain haemorrhage in St Louis Missouri on the 22nd of August 1904. She was 54.
For much of the 20th Century her work was forgotten and out of print. It was only in early 1970’s, with the rise of feminism and the call for a more just society that she was given the status her works had long described and shone a literary light at. She is now safely revered as one of America’s great authors.

This collection of three ghost stories, by master of the genre M. R. James, first appeared in "A Warning to the Curious" published in 1925. James wrote "The Haunted Dolls' House" in 1923 on a commission from Queen Mary who wanted miniature books from the most popular writers of the day to include in the library of her doll's house at Windsor Castle. Antique dealer Mr. Chittenden has an exquisite example of a doll's house in his shop. After a little haggling he manages to offload it onto one of his regular customers, a collector called Mr. Dillet. It becomes abundantly clear that Chittenden and his wife are all too glad to see the back of it, as whosoever owns the dolls' house is subject to supernatural visions every morning at one o'clock. Also included in this collection are "An Evening's Entertainment" and "A Neighbour's Landmark".
