Sinopsis

Twenty-something Ruthie Cohen, a data entry minion for a second-tier movie app, spends her days thinking about the kickass meals she’s going to make for her besties, Trish and Lilly, while pining for Dean (sigh, Dean), her vacation fling from six months earlier. Could they have made it work in real life?

On top of that, Bubbe Bobby Grace, Ruthie’s beloved and inspiring grandmother, passed away and left Ruthie an inheritance of $62,873.42, along with instructions on how to use it: “Follow your passion, Dollface.” During a prosecco-fueled night with her gal pals, Ruthie decides to turn her passion into a career and learn the art of French cooking, enrolling in culinary school, paying tuition, and buying her chef’s whites with a few quick clicks online. It’s not long before Ruthie marches into the kitchen and feels the heat from her cooking partner, Jeff, the super hunky (totally taken!) musician that weasels his way into her brain — right next to Dean.

How can anyone be expected to focus on school, cooking, career planning, baking, friends, and deciding between two hot guys, especially when one of them also thinks that John Cusack is woefully underrated? And what if neither feels quite like Ruthie’s perfect pairing?

Try as he might, Junius "Little Whit" Whitman can't unsee the busted foundation of his father's holy roller faith. All in one night, he's watched a man die in the middle of a prayer service, a tornado level a neighboring town, and his parents' marriage incinerate above him. Even though he doubles down on his efforts to believe, Whit enters young adulthood searching for a faith he can hold onto.
As he encounters real diversity for the first time at college, Whit's crisis spins out faster and further than he can keep up with. His friend Isaias teaches him to listen to other people's stories with compassion, which frustrates his assumptions and complicates his view of the world. Expulsion, injustice, and his first love affair combine to leave him unmoored, kept afloat only by the love of his friends and his need for honest answers to life's big questions.
Whit's newfound perspective causes him to examine his and his sister's childhood with a different lens, revealing a darker and more damaging past than he'd recognized at the time. Whit can't simply come to terms with what has happened. He must lean on synthetic family, discover tangible grace, and confront his hidden demons if he has any hope of a better life for himself and those he loves.

The true definition of a shaggy dog story is as follows: a long, rambling story or joke, typically one that is amusing only because it is absurdly inconsequential or pointless. A ‘Shaggy dog’ story in its purest form is a long-winded tale which eventually arrives at a sometimes ridiculous and often ‘groan-inducing’ punchline. After much research and to the best of my knowledge, these stories have never been released in audiobook form or print. Having said that, the main reason for putting together this collection of stories and jokes is in the hope of encouraging parents, particularly fathers to become storytellers to their children, although obviously, anyone can listen. As a father of three, these stories hold fond memories for me during long car journeys and keeping my sons entertained. No matter how many times they’re repeated, kids love to hear them over and over again. Some of the stories might be considered incredibly ‘cringe worthy’ but the fact is, kids, love them and will love hearing you tell them. I guarantee they will pass these stories on to their children when they too become parents. Some of these tales might not be considered ‘politically correct these days, so use your judgement in their retelling. I have included some of the best ‘Quickfire Dad jokes’ between stories and a rude section of rhymes and limericks at the end of the book. These will hopefully bring back fond memories from your childhood and time in the playground as they do for me. Have fun and enjoy spending time with your children, they grow up so quickly. To quote Superman: The son becomes the father and the father becomes the son.

    Monday January 3, 2000

So how do I greet the New Millennium? In despair. I'm a single parent, I live with my mother . . . I have a bald spot the size of a jaffa cake on the back of my head . . . I can't go on like this, drifting into early middle-age. I need a Life Plan . . .

The 'same age as Jesus when he died', Adrian Mole has become a martyr: a single-father bringing up two young boys in an uncaring world. With the ever-unattainable Pandora pursuing her ambition to become Labour's first female PM; his over-achieving half-brother Brett sponging off him; and literary success ever-elusive, Adrian tries to make ends meet and find a purpose.

But little does he realise that his own modest life is about to come to the attention of those charged with policing The War Against Terror . . .

The author is in court with a murderer, she is invited to drink tea from a urine filled pot, she covers theatre and cinema reviews as a London reporter, she works amid opulent carpets and heavy old typewriters with former criminals below in the printing works. She rides a Honda 90 motor bike across the Engiish fens on her way to cover stories in March, birthplace of the fabled March hare, She writes stories about a drunken turnip planter, a man named Jack Spratt, another man who didn't travel as far as his own bees. She writes about being bitten by a totters horse and of a local crazy woman who used to shout up at the newspapers weed ridden gutters. She lived in a house of many young women in Chalk Farm London and as a young wife on a Royal Airforce base in Cambridgeshire. Story telling runs deep within in her and as a young Australian in England she certainly got that opportunity.
