Yet even as political cohesion weakened, this period saw remarkable innovations—including paper, the seismograph, and advances in mathematics and medicine—while Buddhism began its profound influence on Chinese civilization.

  The Ancestral Puebloans, once known as the Anasazi, were among the earliest inhabitants of the American Southwest, establishing complex societies that thrived in the arid landscapes of present-day Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. Their origins trace back thousands of years to nomadic hunter-gatherers who gradually transitioned into settled agricultural communities. Archaeological evidence suggests that the ancestors of the Pueblo people descended from early groups who migrated into the region over 10,000 years ago, following game and adapting to the changing environment. 
  As these early populations settled, they developed strategies to cope with the harsh desert conditions. By around 2000 BCE, they had begun cultivating maize, a crop introduced from Mesoamerica, which allowed for more stable food sources and led to the formation of permanent villages. The adoption of agriculture marked a significant shift in their way of life, as they built storage pits for surplus grain and started domesticating turkeys for additional sustenance. Over time, these settlements expanded, and small familial clusters evolved into larger communities. 
  The Basketmaker period, beginning around 1200 BCE, represents a crucial stage in Ancestral Puebloan development. During this era, people lived in semi-subterranean pit houses, circular structures dug into the earth and covered with wooden frames and mud plaster. These early homes provided insulation against the region’s extreme temperatures. The Basketmakers were also known for their exceptional weaving and basketry skills, crafting intricate containers and sandals from yucca fibers and other natural materials. Pottery, which became a defining feature of Puebloan culture, gradually emerged during the later stages of this period, allowing for improved food storage and cooking techniques.

  Before the Numidians were conquered by the Romans and Numidia was officially made part of Roman Africa, they developed a culture that was as sophisticated and unique as any in the ancient world. The Numidians were a Berber people who emerged from the edge of the desert in the late 2nd millennium BCE, and despite the harshness of their environment (or perhaps because of it), they eventually became the most powerful people in North Africa. The Numidians found success on the backs of horses, which they rode to countless military victories, and when they could not defeat their enemies with conventional tactics, they were not afraid to resort to asymmetrical warfare.  
  	The most famous conflict with the Romans was the Jugurthine War, even though the Romans do not appear to have officially declared war on Numidia. The Romans entered Numidia determined to defeat Jugurtha and his Numidian army in a very conventional way, but having fought alongside and against the Numidians in the Punic Wars, the Romans should have known better, as Jugurtha knew that he had little chance of defeating the Romans in head-to-head combat. Numidia was rich, but it was not as rich as Rome in resources or people, and although the Numidian military was among the best in the Mediterranean at the time, it was not equipped to defeat the Romans.  
  	The most significant aspect of the Jugurthine War was the rivalry that it produced between Marius and Sulla. As was tradition, the commander, Marius, received the credit for the victory, but Sulla resented that his own part was downplayed, in particular his personal success in taking Jugurtha into custody. Sulla had a celebratory ring made to commemorate the event, and he, and the aristocratic faction that supported him, did all they could to enhance the role he had played while minimizing that of Marius.

  The 2016 election of Donald Trump focused people's minds on populism, and most of the attention paid to the subject since has been on the threat it poses to wealthy democracies. In Democracy Unmoored, Samuel Issacharoff takes a far wider-angle view of the phenomenon, covering countries from across the globe: Brazil, Poland, Argentina, Turkey, India, Hungary, Venezuela, and more. Just as importantly, he focuses on populism's attack on the institutions of governance. Democracy requires two critical features: first, a commitment to repeat play such that political actors understand that what goes around comes around; and, second, institutional constraints so that the majority can prevail, albeit not by too much. Democracies must avoid the doomsday scenario in which the contending parties see the next election as the final choice between salvation and perdition. Issacharoff shows how populist governance undermines each of these two critical underpinnings of stable democracy, first by compressing the time horizon to the immediate, and second by eroding institutional constraints on strongman rule.
