Sinopsis

DUMAS - The Greatest Works of the Father and the Son presents a magnificent collection blending the rich literary legacies of Alexandre Dumas and his son, Alexandre Dumas fils. This anthology showcases a tapestry of themes ranging from swashbuckling adventures and historical escapades to poignant explorations of societal issues and romance. The amalgamation of prose styles'Äîfrom the elder Dumas'Äô vibrant narratives filled with intrigue and heroism to the younger Dumas'Äô introspective and socially conscious tales'Äîoffers a diverse reading experience that captures the imagination while reflecting the dynamic literary landscape of the 19th century. The anthology brings together the formidable literary talents of the two Dumases, whose combined works have significantly shaped French literature. Alexandre Dumas, with his masterful storytelling, laid the groundwork for the romantic historical novel, while Alexandre Dumas fils contributed a more contemporary, critical eye through his dramas and novels. Collectively, their works reflect the broader Romantic and Realist movements, with themes that challenge class distinctions, explore moral dilemmas, and underscore the complexities of human nature. Readers are invited to traverse through this collection, embracing the compelling narratives and diverse characters that offer a multitude of perspectives and literary styles. DUMAS - The Greatest Works of the Father and the Son promises to enrich the reader's understanding of the literary and historical context of the era, presenting an invaluable trove of narratives that continue to resonate today. It is a recommended read for those seeking not only entertainment but also an insightful dialogue between two trailblazers of literary history.

South Away follows Meaghan Marie Hackinen and her sister in the adventure of a lifetime: bicycling from Terrace, British Columbia, down the West Coast to (almost) the tip of the Baja Peninsula. Along the way Hackinen battles with the elements in Vancouver Island's dense northern forests and frigid Mexican deserts; encounters strange men, suicidal highways, and monster trucks; and makes some emergency repairs as ties and spokes succumb to the ravages of the journey. Luckily, the pair meet some good people along the way and glean some insight about the kindness of strangers.

A rare road trip story with two female leads, this travel memoir also chronicles an inner journey, as the author begins to better understand her relationship with her adventurous (and not-so-adventurous) family. South Away tells an engaging and personable tale, with imaginative and memorable depictions of land and sea along the ever-winding coast.

“I stand and face the sea,
as the waves come crashing to the shore,
the music of the sea is thunderous and loud.
Yet I am unafraid, I chase the waves, I run about,
excited but calm, I want to explore, I only want more.”
    —fifi coo, 11 June 2016

After eight years of quiet, fifi coo found his voice through the collective love of a family, the patience and resourcefulness of a mother, and a simple alphabet board. The board became the interface between fifi’s thoughts and the public world beyond him. With it, he speaks poetry.

    —
How open are we to specialness in our lives? Open the door to the tiny spaces within you, and let in fifi coo’s inner light.

    A note from fifi

For parents whose hearts are in deep sorrow, I only wish my poems will offer them hope and encouragement for themselves and for their child to one day find his/her voice.

For teachers, therapists and those who have a duty or a job to help special needs individuals lead a more fulfilling life, I hope my book will encourage them to explore new ways of teaching and to not label us as low functioning if we are non-verbal. I hope my book will also help them see that understanding autism cannot be based on theories and experiences with other non-verbal autistics. I hope my book makes them rethink what autism is about and that whatever questions they have about autism, the only person that can give them real answers will be the individual that they are trying to help.

For anyone else who might read my book, I hope they will hear inside my heart and hear my loneliness and experience what it is like to be a human person frequently misunderstood and trapped in a body that is not very functional. I hope I can be a lonely voice for all my non-verbal friends. We experience loneliness in a way that no one can ever understand unless they too lose their voices and have special needs.

By the time she was thirty, Gila Pfeffer was the oldest living member of her family, having lost her mother to breast cancer and her father to colon cancer. A simple blood test confirmed she carried the BRCA1 gene—which put her at high risk of developing cancer herself. Determined to break the cycle of early death in her family, Gila decides to undergo an elective double mastectomy.

This memoir follows her journey as she becomes a reluctant expert on how to sit shiva, grows up, falls in love, and enters motherhood, before her life is derailed yet again. Her double mastectomy reveals cancer already growing in one breast.

After enduring eight rounds of chemo and the removal of her ovaries, she takes her last-ever dip in the mikvah waters as a bald, menopausal, thirty-five-year-old mother of four. With chutzpah honed over years of repeatedly surviving the worst, she manages to save her own life.

Drenched in Gila's dark humor, Nearly Departed is a story about thriving against the odds, committing to what's important, and leaving a better legacy than the one you inherited.
