But when the villagers start to hear barking, and one claims to see the Mansfield sisters transform before his very eyes, the allegations spark fascination and fear like nothing has before. The truth is that though the inhabitants of Little Nettlebed have never much liked the Mansfield girls—a little odd, think some; a little high on themselves, perhaps—they’ve always had plenty to say about them. As the rotating perspectives of five villagers quickly make clear, now is no exception. Even if local belief in witchcraft is waning, an aversion to difference is as widespread as ever, and these conflicting narratives all point to the same ultimate conclusion: Something isn’t right in Little Nettlebed, and the sisters will be the ones to pay for it.A richly atmospheric parable of the pleasures and perils of female defiance, The Hounding considers whether in any age it might be safer to be a dog than an unusual young girl.A Macmillan Audio production from Henry Holt & Company

William Fryer Harvey AM was born on 14th April 1885 into a wealthy Quaker family in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

He was educated at the Quaker Bootham School in Yorkshire and Leighton Park School in Reading before university at Balliol College, Oxford.

His health was fragile and he poured his energies into writing short stories and in 1910 published his first collection ‘Midnight House’.

In the Great War he was with the Friends' Ambulance Unit and then served as a surgeon-lieutenant in the Royal Navy. There he received the Albert Medal for Lifesaving but lung damage received at that time troubled him for the rest of his life.

He continued to write short stories, and even a memoir, but by 1925 ill health had forced his retirement to any outside work. Three years later he published his second collection which contained his macabre classic ‘The Beast with Five fingers’, only one more collection would come from his pen in his lifetime.

For many years of his life he now lived in Switzerland with his wife but a yearning to be home saw them come back to England in 1935.

W F Harvey died in Letchworth on the 4th June 1937. He was 52.

Eric abandons his fiancé, Eleanor, at the Edinburgh Christmas market, following a mysterious woman back to the hotel she owns in the Highlands. Here he meets the men that staff the vacant rooms. Men like him. Men with something to hide…
By day, the men carry out their domestic chores in the hotel, cut off from the rest of the world by the snow. At night, they tell horror stories beside the fire, hoping to entertain the woman they serve. They do not ask why there are no guests, why it always snows, why they can't go home. Seeds of doubt begin to plague Eric and, as he delves deeper into the lives of the men at the hotel, secrets are uncovered.
The Gingerbread Men mixes Shining-esque mystery with dark fairy-tales, serving up a perfect Highland hotel horror. Joanna Corrance’s nightmarish novel explores the quiet corridors of desire that pull us, and the places occupied by men and women in the tales we’re all familiar with.

Title: The Case of Charles Dexter Ward (Part 2 of 3)
    Series Name: Timeless Terrors
    Series Entry: 150
    Author: H. P. Lovecraft
    Narrator: Jonathan Dunne
    Original Publication: 1941
    Public Domain: Yes
    Description:
As Charles Dexter Ward’s obsession deepens, the boundaries between scholarly pursuit and dangerous obsession begin to collapse entirely. His studies of Joseph Curwen move beyond historical curiosity into obsessive reconstruction — as though he is not merely learning about the past, but attempting to rebuild it.
In his secluded laboratory, Ward performs increasingly strange and secretive experiments. Witnesses report unsettling disturbances: odd smells drifting from sealed rooms, lights burning late into the night, and a growing sense that Ward is no longer acting alone. His handwriting begins to shift in subtle but alarming ways, and his behavior grows more erratic, alternating between periods of intense focus and unsettling detachment.
At the same time, Dr. Marinus Bicknell Willett, a family physician and friend of the Ward household, begins to suspect that something profoundly unnatural is unfolding. His quiet investigation leads him through hidden records, forgotten correspondence, and disturbing clues tied to Curwen’s long-discredited reputation. What he uncovers suggests not only that Curwen was far more than a mere occult enthusiast, but that his influence may not have ended with his death.
As Ward’s experiments escalate, the line between past and present begins to blur. There are hints of impossible survivals, forbidden knowledge passed down through hidden means, and a growing implication that Curwen’s presence is not merely historical — but active. The city of Providence itself becomes a backdrop of mounting unease, as ordinary life continues unaware of the uncanny forces gathering just beneath its surface.
