Elizabeth Cleghorn Stevenson (Gaskell de casada) nació en Londres en 1810. En 1832 contrajo matrimonio con William Gaskell, ministro unitario, y la pareja se estableció en Manchester, una ciudad sometida a las secuelas de la revolución Industrial.
