الكتاب أحد أهم مؤلفات اللغوي البصري سيبويه ويعتبر أول كتاب منهجي ينسق قواعد اللغة العربية ويدونها. وقال عنه الجاحظ أنه «لم يكتب الناس في النحو كتاباً مثله». أُلِّفَ الكتاب في القرن الثاني للهجرة الموافق للثامن من الميلاد. سمي بالكتاب لأن مؤلفه تركه دون عنوان.
إن كتاب «معيار الاختيار فى ذكر المعاهد والديار» لابن الخطيب من اطرف كتب المؤلف الشهيرة، فقد صاغه على هيئة مقامة ادبية ذات منهاج وأسلوب فنى انفرد به لسان الدين روعة وابداعا، مستهدفا وصف اهم المدن الاندلسية والمغربية جغرافيا واجتماعيا كما رآها وعاصرها فى منتصف القرن الثامن الهجرى (منتصف الرابع عشر الميلادى) . فلم تكن المقامة التقليدية لديه هدفا لذاتها من شعوذة واستجداء كما هى عند الحريرى والهمذانى وغيرهما، أو وعظ وتذكير بالدار الآخرة وما فيها من ثواب وعقاب كما هى عند الزمخشرى والدمياطى وامثالهما، بل ان المؤلف كانت غايته علمية بحتة ابرزها فى صورة ادبية ثقافية ممتعة، وبالرغم من قيود السجع والمحسنات البديعية الا أن وصفه للبلدان فى مناحى شتى قد جاء فى صورة مشوقة تنبض حياة، وتتألق براعة.Show book
