  في صيف 1990، حربٌ تصهل خيولها في المنطقة وفجائعٌ على الأبواب، عامٌ من الغبار والنظر في مرآةٍ وجودية عميقة لأمةٍ مشت وتحرّكت في الشعر لكنها شربت وأكلت مع الحروب.
  في الرقّة شرقي سوريا، مررنا على رجلٍ بالصدفة، نطلب ماءً،  كان يبكي وحيداً بعيداً عن البيوتات الطينية القريبة.
  رجلٌ خمسينيٌ بطول سروةٍ وهيبة فارس، كان يبكي بحرقةٍ ودمعٍ بلّل ثوبه العربي المطرّز في هذه القائظة فزاده تطريزا.. نزلت من سيارتي بكل عنفوان شابٍ عشريني، قلت له هل تحتاج شيئاً، هل نقدم لك مساعدةً ما؟
  فقال لي وكأنه يهمس لي وحدي: مات أبي وانهدّ سقف الدار، ثم قال بصوت لا أنساه:
  
  أنا لابجي.. وأبجّي الهور وفراه
  على شحّ النهر من بعد وفراه
  مضى من عطى العتّاب وفراه
  وصار بحر العتابا تراب بتراب
  
  وقع بيت العتابا هذا على رأسي تماماً كهراوةٍ ثقيلةٍ فأقعدني قرب الرجل لا حول لي ولا قوة، حفظته جرعةً واحدةً بزحافاته وعلله وغموضه وكشفه، عانقت الرجل المكلوم الذي بكى بين يدي غريبٍ حشمةً من القريب. نحن الرجال نفهم هذا. حفظت هذا البيت كضربة سيف وظللت أردده حتى مشيب رأسي وفقد والدي الذي فسرّ البيت من جديد بضربة سيفٍ واحدة أيضاً.  فسّر لي كل هذا البكاء الذي يفطر الحجر رغم أنني أتحضرّ للموقف مذ تلك المشهدية التي نغّصت ألوان الحياة لشابٍ في مقتبل الحياة، انتبه؛ صدفةً أيضاً، أن الموت لا بدّ أن يأتي للأقارب والأباعد، وأن موت الأب -كما رأينا- ريحٌ صرصرٌ  تشلع الخيام وتكشف عورات الرجال فتعيدهم أطفالا..
