يعد هذا الكتاب ترجمة لعدد من النساء الشاعرات في صدر الإسلام والعصر الأموي ، ويعد مرجعا هاما لما ورد إلينا عن أشعار النساء، وقد أسهب  المؤلف في سرد ما ورد عن بعضهن من خلال سيرتهن والمواقف والسياقات التي نظمن فيها الشعر، فتارة تساجل الشاعرة شاعرًا ، وتارة تهجو آخر ، أو ترثي زوجًا أو ابنًا ، وتمدح خليفة أو حاكما في موضع آخر … وهكذا.
وهذا يؤكد دور النساء في الشعر العربي، وما تميزن به من مواهب ومعان جزلة رقيقة، ومنهن من فاقت شعراء عصرها وتمتعت بمكانة هامة بين معاصريها من شعراء عصرها.
ومؤلف هذا الكتاب هو أبو عبيد الله بن محمد بن عمران بن موسى المرزباني (المتوفى: 384هـ) وهو عالم واسع الاطلاع، واسع المعرفة بالروايات، واللهجات العربية .
