  لم يَكُن اكتِئابُه بِسَببِ اللَّيلَةِ السَّيِّئَة وحَسْبُ، لقد راسَلَته زَوجَتُه قائِلَةً إنَّها لن تَعودَ إلى ريو دي چانيرو، لقد استَنزَفَتْها حياةُ الأَمواتِ هَذِه، لم تَعُدْ تَقبَلُ بالنَّومِ مَع رَجُلٍ يَعُدُّ سِلاحَهُ امتدادًا لجَسَدِه، رَجُلٌ لا يَرتاحُ بالُه، قاتِلٌ، لم تَعُدْ تَرغَبُ في الاستيقاظِ فَزَعًا من أَصواتِ العالَمِ، ذلك التَّقرُّحُ غَيرُ القابِلِ للعِلاجِ الَّذي أَصابَها كانَ بِسَبَبِ جَهلِها بِمَصيرِ زَوجِها في نِهايَةِ كُلِّ يَومٍ، عَزَلَها غِيابُ شُعورِها بالأَمانِ أَثناءَ مَشيِها في الشَّارِعِ دونَ أَيِّ راحَةِ بالٍ، كَونُها زَوْجَةَ ضابِطِ شُرطَةٍ صَعَّبَ عَلَيها صُنعَ صَداقاتٍ، أمضت حياتَها حَبيسَةَ المَنزِلِ، وإِنْ أكثَرَت من الشَّكوى نالَت ضَربًا...
  وفَكَّرَ أَنَّ كَونَهُ ضابِطَ شُرطَةٍ أَفضلَ مِن التَّعامُلِ مَعَ السُّكارَى في الحاناتِ، عَلِمَ هَذا عَن الخِبرَةِ السابِقَةِ؛ إِذْ كانَ يَعمَلُ في إِحدى حاناتِ وَسطِ المَدينَةِ قَبلَ أَنْ يَلتَحِقَ بالسِّلكِ الشُّرَطيِّ.

At one dark night this special rain pours heavier than usual and rips apart an opening to reveal an extension of their world, exposing a neighbouring strange world that follows different rules, this revelation flips their beliefs about what is possible and impossible in the world, which instantly causes dramatic shifts in their own world.
