Summary

Dams of India explores the multifaceted role of dams in shaping India's water resources, power generation, and agricultural landscape. It examines how these massive engineering projects have influenced the nation's development, while also considering the environmental and socio-economic consequences. The book highlights the historical evolution of dam construction in India, from ancient water harvesting systems to modern mega-dams. Intriguingly, dam construction often involves geological considerations for site selection, and the book emphasizes the necessity of sustainable dam management practices to mitigate environmental impacts and maximize benefits for all stakeholders.

The book progresses through distinct sections, beginning with an introduction to dam engineering principles and then transitions into analyzing major Indian dams by region and purpose. It further delves into the socio-economic impacts, documenting case studies of displacement and the effectiveness of resettlement policies. Finally, it examines the environmental consequences of dam construction, such as altered river ecosystems and deforestation. This approach provides a comprehensive understanding of the complex challenges and successes associated with dam construction and its profound influence on India's infrastructure development.

As interesting as the stories about Tycho Brahe are, chances are he wouldn’t be remembered if not for the important work he did, especially in the realm of astronomy. He lived in an era when the intellectual worldview of most in northern Europe was medieval in nature, influenced mostly by spirituality, mysticism, religion, and metaphysics. Brahe, however, was far-thinking in his outlook, taking advantages of the latest technological ideas and practicing empiricism to revolutionize the field of science. This work eventually led Brahe to cross paths with Johannes Kepler, whose laws on planetary motion would change everything.
Trying to define a man who had the qualities of a mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, inventor, and astrologer can prove difficult. But all of that can be ascribed to Johannes Kepler, one of the giants of his era who ushered in the Scientific Revolution and is often considered the first modern scientist. Kepler stood at a moment in time when the intellectual worldview of most in northern Europe was medieval in nature. Kepler, however, was far-thinking in his outlook.
In his lifetime, Galileo straddled the epochs of the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution, and it was his work and technological advances that helped usher in a brand new understanding of the solar system and the scientific method. Stephen Hawking himself has asserted, “Galileo, perhaps more than any other single person, was responsible for the birth of modern science." Of course, part of what made Galileo such a monumental figure was the fact that he was ahead of his time, and that he mostly refused to conform to the accepted dogmas of contemporary society.
In 1676, Sir Isaac Newton wrote in a letter, “If I have seen further it is by standing on ye sholders of Giants.” By the time he died, Newton had become science’s greatest giant, and every scientist who has followed him has stood on his shoulders.

Welcome to A Practice Built on CultureIn an orthodontic practice, great culture is about more than creating a good place for people to work, it can determine the success of the practice. A great workplace culture is one where everyone smiles, is genuinely happy to be there, and works together as a team. It’s clear to anyone entering the practice that something truly amazing is happening, and that amazing feeling translates to excellence in treatment and care.In Smiles Made Here: How Culture Forges Success in an Orthodontic Practice, Dr. Jeremiah Sturgill explains how Sturgill Orthodontics became a practice where team members—and patients—want to be. Using his own journey in building a practice as an example, he shares how other orthodontists can build an amazing culture in their practices by focusing on what matters most: providing excellent care while genuinely caring about people. From a different kind of morning huddle to showing heart in the workplace, coaching the team, understanding the value of autonomy, and creating an environment where people feel safe, Dr. Sturgill shows how focusing on culture can lead to an amazing transformation. In this book, Dr. Sturgill also shares answers to some of the most common questions that patients and parents of young patients often have about treatment, and how culture impacts the care at Sturgill Orthodontics. He talks about when treatment is needed, when to start, the art of the smile, and more. As a specialist in temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD) and airway protective orthodontics, Dr. Sturgill also shares the important role orthodontics plays in treating problems of the jaw and airway. Finally, he discusses how the value of orthodontics goes beyond straightening teeth and how all orthodontists are not created equal—and culture is the differentiator.

Working in industry as a Chemical Engineer boring ... who says it is? Most people consider working in the Industrial world to be fairly mundane and boring. Well I am able to contradict that erroneous belief. My forty years in industry have been far from ordinary and unexciting. In fact those years have been so eventful and exhilarating, I felt compelled to put events, incidents and a plethora of eclectic, fascinating characters into print and write about my career as a Chemical Engineer from the late sixties to the beginning of the eighties. While I typed away, it occurred to me, these stories are so way out, fantastic and implausible, no-one will believe a word of it. Using that old cliché, fact is often stranger than fiction. Read more and make your own mind up, as it is indeed Life‛s Rich Mix.
