Summary

In "The History of Xenophon," the ancient Greek historian and soldier crafts a compelling narrative that intertwines personal experience with broader historical themes, notably the complexities of leadership, warfare, and human nature. Written in a direct and engaging prose style, the text reflects both personal observations from Xenophon's campaigns and his philosophical reflections on power dynamics. In a literary context that bridges the gap between narrative history and political philosophy, Xenophon employs a distinctive approach that examines the consequences of decisions made in the heat of battle and the virtues of effective governance, influenced by his time among the Greek mercenaries known as the Ten Thousand. Xenophon, a contemporary of Plato and student of Socrates, brings a unique perspective shaped by his experiences as a soldier and a politician in the turbulent landscape of 4th-century BCE Greece. His insights into the moral and ethical dilemmas faced by leaders are informed by his diverse roles, which include historian, philosopher, and military commander. This multifaceted background imbues his writing with a richness and authenticity that resonate throughout his historical inquiries. Readers interested in the intersection of history and philosophy will find "The History of Xenophon" an invaluable addition to their library. This work not only provides a vivid account of historical events but also prompts thoughtful reflection on the attributes that define effective leadership. Xenophon's blend of narrative skill and keen observation makes this text a timeless exploration of human ambition and the lessons learned through conflict.

Imagine you’ve eaten some hallucinogenic mushrooms—and things aren’t going well. You’re disoriented, panicking. But you can call someone. Who do you call?
For Vishal, the answer was his philosopher friend William. He has a PhD in philosophy and can deliver one hell of a talk-down to someone in an existential crisis. He helped Vishal through his bad trip by telling him about Aristotle.
That conversation inspired Ask Aristotle, a refreshingly un-schoolish introduction to one of history’s most legendary thinkers.
This book is important because it brings a powerful philosophy out of the Ivory Tower and into the real world. It even does this in a playful format—a modern spin on the Platonic dialogue, which makes the reading experience feel like eavesdropping on a fascinating conversation.
It’s the next best thing to a podcast with Aristotle.

By the golden age of the mountain man in the mid-19th-century, there were perhaps only 3,000 living in the West. Their origins were disparate, although they included many Anglo-Americans. A good number hailed from wilderness regions of Kentucky and Virginia and throughout the newly purchased Louisiana Territory, which occupied the entire central section of the continent. French Canadians traveled from the north to work in the fur trade, while Creole-Europeans represented approximately 15% of the men known to be living the isolated mountain life. Others were of Métis, Spanish, American, Black, Indian, and mixed-blood origin, most often Iroquois or Delaware. Most came to the West in their late adolescent years, the oldest learning the trade in their 30s. Many roamed the west for as long as their constitutions would hold up under constant attacks on their health and personal safety. Some stayed too long and failed to survive the experience. Among the most famous, Jim Bridger arrived at the age of 16, while Edward Robinson was eventually killed in his 60s by what were known as “bad snakes,” a reference to the Snake tribe in Idaho country. Jim Beckwourth left the mountains at 68 and Old Bill Williams died at the age of 62 when a band of Utes “made him to come.”
Most of the most notable frontiersmen traveled immense distances during their careers, and for many, only distant memories could recreate the routes taken. Few of the significant wilderness figures were experienced as cartographers to create accurate maps for industry, settlement, and the military. These American frontiersmen made first contact with numerous indigenous tribes in virtually every area of the west, but viable maps were few, and between such disparate cultures, relations could prove profitable or deadly at a moment’s notice.

This audiobook narrated by acclaimed British actor Anthony Head explores cuteness and its immense hold on us, from emojis and fluffy puppies to its more uncanny, subversive expressions

Cuteness has taken the planet by storm. Global sensations Hello Kitty and Pokémon, the works of artists Takashi Murakami and Jeff Koons, Heidi the cross-eyed opossum and E.T.—all reflect its gathering power. But what does "cute" mean, as a sensibility and style? Why is it so pervasive? Is it all infantile fluff, or is there something more uncanny and even menacing going on—in a lighthearted way? In The Power of Cute, Simon May provides nuanced and surprising answers.

We usually see the cute as merely diminutive, harmless, and helpless. May challenges this prevailing perspective, investigating everything from Mickey Mouse to Kim Jong-il to argue that cuteness is not restricted to such sweet qualities but also beguiles us by transforming or distorting them into something of playfully indeterminate power, gender, age, morality, and even species. May grapples with cuteness's dark and unpindownable side—unnerving, artful, knowing, apprehensive—elements that have fascinated since ancient times through mythical figures, especially hybrids like the hermaphrodite and the sphinx. He argues that cuteness is an addictive antidote to today's pressured expectations of knowing our purpose, being in charge, and appearing predictable, transparent, and sincere. Instead, it frivolously expresses the uncertainty that these norms deny: the ineliminable uncertainty of who we are; of how much we can control and know; of who, in our relations with others, really has power; indeed, of the very value and purpose of power.
The Power of Cute delves into a phenomenon that speaks with strange force to our age.
