Sinopse

Reading Habit unveils the transformative power of daily reading as a science-backed tool for sharpening the mind, easing stress, and fostering lifelong intellectual growth. Blending neuroscience, psychology, and cultural analysis, the book positions reading not as a passive pastime but as an active mental workout that reshapes brain structure and emotional resilience. Through interdisciplinary research, it reveals how sustained reading habits strengthen neural connectivity, reduce cortisol levels by 68% within minutes, and slow cognitive decline—a compelling case for treating books as essential self-care tools in our screen-saturated world.

The book stands out by merging evolutionary context with modern data, showing how reading’s flow state immersion counters digital-age stressors like information overload. It contrasts the fragmented focus demanded by social media with reading’s unique ability to synchronize brain regions linked to empathy, critical thinking, and imagination. Practical strategies—like micro-reading sessions and genre rotation—help readers overcome time constraints while maintaining neuroplasticity. Unlike generic self-help guides, it acknowledges reading’s limits but argues convincingly for its role as a cognitive investment with compounding benefits, from enhanced problem-solving skills to greater cultural empathy.

Written in accessible prose free of jargon, Reading Habit progresses from historical roots to actionable techniques, offering a roadmap to rebuild attention spans and curiosity. Its value lies in synthesizing decades of research into a cohesive argument: that this ancient practice remains one of humanity’s most potent tools for psychological well-being in modern life.

Our culture today is in a state of crisis where intellectual virtue is concerned. Dishonesty, cheating, arrogance, laziness, cowardice—such vices are rampant in society, even among the world's most prominent leaders. We find ourselves in an ethical vacuum, as the daily headlines of our newspapers confirm again and again. Central to the problem is the state of education. We live in a technological world that has ever greater access to new information and yet no idea what to do with it all.

In this wise and winsome book, Philip Dow presents a case for the recovery of intellectual character. He explores seven key virtues—courage, carefulness, tenacity, fair-mindedness, curiosity, honesty, and humility—and discusses their many benefits. The recovery of virtue, Dow argues, is not about doing the right things, but about becoming the right kind of person. The formation of intellectual character produces a way of life that demonstrates love for both God and neighbor.

Dow has written an eminently practical guide to a life of intellectual virtue designed especially for parents and educators. The book concludes with seven principles for a true education.

The Byzantine Empire existed for over a thousand years, with a history spanning from the division of the Roman Empire in 395 until the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. It was formed from the previous Eastern Roman Empire, and during its long existence, the Byzantine inhabitants were very proud to call themselves Romans.
However, many things changed during the long lifespan of the Byzantine Empire, starting with a Hellenization in the 6th century. The use of the Latin language diminished and Greek took its place, while the typical Roman culture gave way to a more Hellenistic one. The Hellenization of Byzantium was detrimental to the relationship with the Holy Roman Empire, and the Christian world from that point would be split in two. The subsequent strengthening of the Orthodox Church caused many civil wars and conflicts to arise during the centuries, which shattered and reshaped the territory time after time. By the end of the Byzantine Empire’s existence, the old age had weakened both the state and church, making it an easy target for invading forces.
The most notable invaders were the Turkish-speaking Seljuks, led through a series of battles by Kutalmishouglu Suleiman, who supported different usurpers against the Byzantine emperor. The expansion of the Seljuks was so successful that when Suleiman died, he had put all of Bithynia under his control as well as several important harbor towns along the shores on the Asian side of Bosphorus. With that accomplishment, he had managed to separate the Byzantines living in Anatolia from their emperor in Constantinople. This immediately weakened the unity of the Byzantine Empire.
Of all the conflicts that brought this state of affairs into being, few were as instrumental as the Battle of Kapetron, the culmination of one of the first major Seljuk raids into Byzantine territory.

"Can human problems be solved? - 27 September 1980
    • Why have human beings throughout the world not been able to resolve human,
daily problems of life? What are the things that prevent the solution of these
    problems completely?
    • When there is attention there is no centre from which I attend.
    • A poor man wants to be rich and a rich man wants to be richer. It is a movement
of becoming, becoming, both outwardly and inwardly. Though it brings a great deal of pain and sometimes pleasure, this sense of becoming, fulfilling, achieving psychologically has made my life into all that it is.
    • Is love something that is common to all of us?
    • From the particular move to the general, from the general move away still
deeper, and there perhaps is this purity of that thing called compassion, love and intelligence. But that means giving your mind and heart to this. Your whole being must be involved in this."

God strongly condemns any form of abuse.
In recent years, the struggles of Latter-day Saints in abusive relationships have made national headlines. The media attention has highlighted a deeply unfortunate perception: many Latter-day Saints fear that by choosing to leave an abusive relationship, they are at risk of breaking their covenants with God. Mental health professionals and law enforcement officers who work with Latter-day Saint populations attest to the number of people who continue to be hurt, humiliated, and even killed because they believe it is their religious obligation to endure abuse to the end.
This damaging misperception, and the traditions that have helped create and maintain it, must be corrected. With a direct and straightforward discussion of the doctrines and teachings about abuse, this book not only provides clear guidance for bishops and other local leaders on how to respond to abuse, but it will also help you discover God's true feelings about abuse and the love he has for all who suffer.
Learn to identify the signs of abuse in your own relationships and in others.
Overcome roadblocks that may be hindering escape from an abusive situation.
Follow the path of healing in mind, body, and spirit.
The gospel of Jesus Christ offers tremendous hope, healing, and redemption for those who suffer mistreatment, neglect, and abuse of all kinds. The deliverance offered is not only spiritual and post-mortal, it is temporal, applying to here and now. This message needs to work its way into our collective conscience and become an integral part of our culture.
