Summary

'Candy Candy' delves into the fascinating intersection of human biology, psychology, and our enduring attraction to sweet foods, offering a comprehensive exploration of why we struggle with sugar cravings in the modern world. The book masterfully weaves together evolutionary biology, neuroscience, and behavioral psychology to explain how our ancient survival mechanisms continue to influence our relationship with sugary treats today.

Through three main sections, the book first examines our body's biochemical responses to sugar, including detailed insights into glucose metabolism and insulin dynamics. The narrative then progresses into the psychological realm, revealing how dopamine reward systems, originally designed to ensure survival, now operate in an environment of unprecedented sugar availability. Particularly intriguing is the book's examination of how our foraging ancestors' reliance on sweet tastes as indicators of safe, calorie-dense foods continues to influence our modern eating behaviors.

The final section offers practical strategies for managing sugar consumption while acknowledging our biological predispositions. What sets this book apart is its interdisciplinary approach, combining findings from endocrinology, neuroscience, and behavioral psychology with accessible explanations and relevant case studies. For readers interested in understanding their complex relationship with sweet foods, the book provides both scientific insight and practical applications, all while maintaining a balanced, evidence-based perspective that avoids sensationalism.

By the 20th century, warfare was nothing new to the European powers, especially when it came to fighting each other. Conflicts had been a mainstay on the European continent for over two millennia. Even after the Napoleonic wars had enveloped Europe in large scale war for nearly 20 years in the 19th century, the Europeans’ imperialism continued unabated. It would take the devastation of World War I to shock Europe and jolt the world’s superpowers out of their imperialistic tendencies.
With Europe anticipating a potential war, all that was missing was a conflagration. That would start in 1908, when Austria-Hungary annexed Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Balkan Peninsula, drawing it into dispute with Russia. Moreover, this upset neighboring Serbia, which was an independent nation. From 1912-1913, a conflict was fought in the Balkans between the Balkan League and the Ottoman Empire, resulting in the weakening of the Ottoman Turks. After the First Balkan War, a second was fought months later between members of the Balkan League itself. The final straw came June 28, 1914, when a Serbian assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, in Sarajevo, Bosnia.
The Munich Agreement is widely reviled today and is held up as the epitome of appeasement, but historians still debate its effects on the Second World War, as well as Neville Chamberlain's character and motivations. Some believe the attempted appeasement of Nazi Germany hastened, or even caused, the mayhem occupying the next seven years. Others believe that the pact merely failed to alter war's inevitable arrival in either direction.
Of course, as most people now know, the invasion of Poland was merely the preface to the Nazi blitzkrieg of most of Western Europe, which would include Denmark, Belgium, and France by the summer of 1940

I hope, after you read this, that you feel as in love with this land and its citizens, both human and more than human, as I do. Long live Appalachia!” —Rebecca Beyer, author of Wild Witchcraft   In an ode to her Appalachian roots and ancestors, known and unknown, of blood and kin, Leah Middleton, the Redheaded Witch, tells the stories of the grandfathers who had dirt under their fingernails from farming, the grandmothers who bled while sewing their garments, the relatives who decided to take a leap of faith and pave a new path, the ones who passed away too young, and the fellow practitioners and healers who showed her the way. It is a work of veneration to keep their spirits alive. If you share similar roots or find yourself creating new ones, this magical book is a hand to welcome you home. Explore the superstitions of the mountains, the healing charms of doctors, and the folk beliefs of witchery. Wander down shadowy paths lined with rhododendrons, uncovering the hidden corners where charms are whispered and prayers are spoken. Uncover the superstitions captured in this region that have inspired magical workings for protection and healing. Learn to walk the witch’s path as a rite conducted with reverence and solemnity. It is time to draw our lines in the sand as Christians and Conservatives by engaging in public conversations with truth and conviction.

Kira Davis has built a brand on reaching out to the other side, on giving people space to be wrong, the space to discuss, the space to tolerate. Unfortunately, the people controlling the public conversations right now will have none of it. We're seeing the lengths they will go to and the lies they let stand in service of crushing 50 percent of this nation. They seek unity through complete elimination of the other side. There are times for compromise and times to draw a line in the sand; the latter has arrived. It is time to draw our lines as Christians and Conservatives.
