Summary

In "Congressional Government," Woodrow Wilson presents a thorough analysis of the United States Congress, offering a critical evaluation of its structure and functions during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His literary style is both analytical and persuasive, employing clear prose to dissect the complexities of legislative processes and the interplay between the various branches of government. Wilson's work emerges from the Progressive Era's ethos, reflecting a desire for reform and greater efficiency within the political system, as well as a response to contemporary criticisms of legislative gridlock and partisanship. Woodrow Wilson, a political scientist and historian, later became the 28th President of the United States. His deep understanding of the intricacies of governance was shaped by both his academic background and his observations of the political landscape of his time. Wilson was profoundly influenced by the challenges posed by an evolving American democracy, which incited him to advocate for a more dynamic and responsive Congressional framework in this foundational work, seeking to reconcile theory with the practice of political power. "Congressional Government" is essential reading for anyone interested in American political theory and the evolution of government. Wilson's insights remain strikingly relevant today, providing valuable context for contemporary discussions about legislative effectiveness and executive power. This book not only enriches our understanding of Congress but also invites readers to critically engage with the mechanics of democratic governance.

If China seems unstoppable, so too does its leader Xi Jinping. As general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party and president of China, he commands over 1.4 billion people, in a vast country that spans the prosperous megacities of Beijing and Shanghai and desperately poor rural regions where families still struggle with malnutrition.

Today, Xi Jinping faces a series of monumental challenges that would make other global leaders tremble: a trade war with the USA, political unrest in Hong Kong, accusations of genocide in Xinjiang, stuttering economic growth, and a devastating global pandemic that originated inside China.

The search for Tutankhamun’s tomb was one of the most ambitious archaeological pursuits of the early 20th century. For years, Egyptologists and explorers had scoured the Valley of the Kings, believing that the burial site of the young pharaoh remained hidden beneath the desert sands. Despite previous excavations yielding little success, one man remained convinced that the tomb had yet to be discovered.
Howard Carter, a British archaeologist, had spent decades working in Egypt, developing an unmatched expertise in excavation. His belief in the existence of Tutankhamun’s tomb was fueled by fragments of artifacts bearing the young pharaoh’s name, suggesting that his final resting place was still untouched. However, funding such an extensive search required a patron, and it was Lord Carnarvon, a wealthy British aristocrat, who provided the financial backing. In 1917, Carter’s systematic excavation of the Valley of the Kings began, but after several years of fruitless digging, Carnarvon grew impatient.
By 1922, with resources nearly depleted, Carter convinced Carnarvon to allow him one final season of excavation. It was in November of that year that Carter’s persistence paid off. While investigating an area near the tomb of Ramses VI, workers uncovered a set of steps leading down into the earth. Clearing away the debris, Carter discovered a sealed doorway marked with the insignia of Tutankhamun. Excitement and caution filled the air as he realized that the tomb had remained undisturbed for centuries.
