Sinopsis

The British statesman, orator and author Winston Churchill served as prime minister twice, achieving legendary status for rallying the British people during World War II and leading the country from the brink of defeat to victory. In addition to his careers of soldier and politician, Churchill was a prolific writer, starting with war journalism charting his adventures in British India, at the Siege of Malakand, at Sudan during the Mahdist War and in Africa in the Second Boer War. He excelled as a writer of history, producing multi-volume studies of grand subjects to critical acclaim. Many of his speeches and parliamentary answers were also published in pamphlets and collected editions. The last volume of Chesterton's collected essays, Gathered from the London Mercury, the New Witness, and the Illustrated London News, it is the only volume from after WWI, and is most serious, philosophical, and socially direct collection.
"The problem is not so much Prohibition with a large P as prohibition with a small one. I mean, I am interested not so much in liquor as in liberty. I want to know on what principle the prohibitionists are proceeding in this case, and how they think it applies to any other case. And I cannot for the life of me make out. They…do not attack liquor; they do quite simply attack liberty. I mean that they are satisfied with saying about this liberty what can obviously be said about any liberty – that it can be, and is, abominably abused. If that had been a final objection to any form of freedom, there never would have been any form of freedom."
"So long as we combine ceaseless and often reckless scientific speculation with rapid and often random social reform, the result must inevitably be not anarchy but ever-increasing tyranny. There must be a ceaseless and almost mechanical multiplication of things forbidden. The resolution to cure all the ills that flesh is heir to, combined with the guesswork about all possible ills that flesh and nerve and brain-cell may be heir to – these two things conducted simultaneously must inevitably spread a sort of panic of prohibition. Scientific imagination and social reform between them will quite logically and almost legitimately have made us slaves."

    Starting from Scratch - The...

With an “inimitable voice combined with flawless erudition,” this new analysis of the Aeneid “illuminates its subject with a modern light” (Le Monde).

From the bestselling author of The Ingenious Language comes a meditation on rebuilding, recovery, and renewal that is also a fascinating portrait of antiquity’s most complex and surprisingly modern hero.

In times of peace and prosperity, one can turn to Homer to learn valuable life lessons, to experience the thrills and terrors of war, and to read about hair-raising adventures in distant lands. But when things do not go as planned, when we unexpectedly find ourselves at the center of an epoch-defining upheaval, then, writes Andrea Marcolongo, we must look to Virgil’s Aeneas for an example of adaptability and resilience.

In Marcolongo’s fresh, nuanced portrayal, Virgil’s Aeneas emerges as a multiform, deeply human hero, striking in his vulnerability and capacity for empathy. His journey of rebirth and rebuilding, from the ruins of Troy to the shores of Italy, teaches us that when all seems lost, with hope, perseverance, and a little bit of luck, we can seek and find new beginnings.

“Marcolongo is today’s Montaigne . . . There is wisdom and grace here to last the ages.” —André Aciman, New York Times–bestselling author of Call Me by Your Name, now a major motion picture

“A deep look at our all-too-human fragility . . . An impassioned and enthralling book.” —Bon Culture (Italy)

“Through her personal reacquaintance with [the Aeneid] at a time of great distress, Andrea Marcolongo has brought it, as it were, back into the conversation and outside the confines of academia . . . An excellent translation by Will Schutt brilliantly serves Andrea Marcolongo’s passionate endorsement of a work of literature written two millennia ago.” —Reading in Translation

“Andrea Marcolongo has brought us a book from the future.” —La Stampa (Italy)

Packed with exercises, tools, and humor, Fortune's Path gives you value right away that can last a lifetime. "This book is about how to use the principles of recovery to find your fortune. I hope there’s a place for love in your fortune. Most of us are afraid to love in business settings. There’s no reason to be afraid. If you’re just starting your career or even if you’re on your way but feeling stuck, give these principles a try. If you’re like me, you’ll find more success and be happier for trying." Tom Noser"I love the mix of philosophy and practical advice in this book. The Choose Your Own Adventure take on guiding you through typical work situations keeps each chapter engaging and interactive and the summary tables are great to come back to as a reference or refresher! Also Margaret the Pug is adorable and so are the illustrations."" love this book. The format and style is so refreshing and unique, unlike most books I've encountered and definitely much more engaging and entertaining than the typical product management or self help books out there. Tom describes real-life scenarios that are common in business and product management, however the lessons and insights are human focused and applicable to anyone regardless of career. The book is fun to read with a balanced mix of anecdotes, exercises, and quick reference summaries that give readers a variety of ways to interact with the material so it is easy to understand and apply in daily life."

    How to Deal with Difficult...

“My life would be so much better if they weren’t in it.” If you find yourself thinking this a lot, chances are you’re dealing with a particularly difficult person who has made it their life’s mission to bother you. While you’d think that getting rid of that one person will solve all your problems, you’ll most likely encounter someone else just like them sometime in the future.
Difficult people are everywhere, and there’s no escaping them. Thinking that you can get rid of people you dislike is just wishful thinking. After all, can you really get rid of your boss or your in-laws?
Instead of avoiding them or cutting them out of your life, changing your approach to dealing with difficult people is the correct way to go about this problem. However, this book doesn’t guarantee that you’ll never have a problem with a difficult person again. On the contrary, life's problems, arguments, and disputes are quite inevitable. You’re bound to come across people who disagree with you and have no room for personal growth. At this point, instead of getting frustrated, you should opt for healthy ways to deal with such people, which is what this book is all about.
