  The Battle of Stalingrad stands as one of the most defining events of the 20th century, a turning point that shifted the trajectory of World War II. Situated along the banks of the Volga River, Stalingrad was not only a city of industrial and strategic importance but also a symbolic prize for both Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin. The ferocity and scale of the battle transformed it into a microcosm of the broader conflict between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.  
    
  When Germany launched Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, the Wehrmacht seemed unstoppable as it swept across the Soviet Union. Hitler’s ambitions of seizing Soviet territories were fueled by his vision of Lebensraum and the destruction of Bolshevism. By the summer of 1942, German forces were pressing deeper into the southern front, aiming to capture the oil fields of the Caucasus and secure Stalingrad as a vital stepping stone. For Hitler, Stalingrad held immense propaganda value, carrying the name of his adversary, Stalin. Its fall would signify not just a military triumph but a psychological blow to the Soviet people.  
    
  For the Soviet Union, the defense of Stalingrad became a matter of national survival and pride. Stalin’s orders to defend the city at all costs rallied both soldiers and civilians. The infamous directive “Not a step back!” underscored the desperation and determination of the Soviet war effort. As the battle unfolded, Stalingrad was transformed into a hellish landscape of rubble, where every building and street became a battlefield.

  Spartacus is the world’s most famous slave, and one of the most notorious figures of ancient Rome. A slave enamored of freedom and willing to fight and die for it, he became especially popular in the years following the Enlightenment, after which he was widely viewed as a poignant champion of liberty in the 18th and 19th centuries. As a result, he became a symbol during struggles like the French Revolution, the American Revolution, the American Civil War, and the struggle for emancipation. To this day, his dual life as a gladiator and a “freedom fighter” fascinates audiences around the world. His tale, a blend of violent spectacle and civil rights, has been adapted for film (Stanley Kubrick’s memorable Spartacus), television (Starz’s popular television series), and in literature (appearing in everything from historical novels to comics). To this day, Spartacus is a popular first name in central and southern Italy, and his name has been adopted by sports teams like FC Spartak Moscow and FC Spartak Plovdiv. The Soviet Union’s internal version of the Olympics, the Spartakiad, also derived its name from Spartacus. 
  	The reasons for Spartacus’s enduring appeal are obvious, but his uprising has overshadowed the fact that his was actually the third such uprising against the Roman Republic in a short span. Preceding this, the First and Second Servile Wars had already demonstrated that revolts against Rome and the whole institution of slavery could gain momentum, and these earlier uprisings provided a blueprint for the larger attempt by Spartacus to win freedom. All three of these revolts came about because of the Roman practice of enslavement, and as such, any analysis of the Servile Wars requires an understanding of what was involved in the institution of slavery within the Roman system.

  The Prophet is a work of fiction, written by Lebanese-American artist, poet, and philosopher Kahlil Gibran. Gibran was a key figure in Arabic literary modernist movement, which spanned the first half of the twentieth century. As a product of his culturally-rich upbringing, Gibran’s work beautifully blends religious traditions and philosophies from around the world.

  Vincent Schiraldi was New York City probation commissioner under Mayor Bloomberg, supervising a system charged with monitoring 30,000 people on a daily basis. In Mass Supervision, he combines firsthand experience with deep research on the inadequately explored practices of probation and parole, to illustrate how these forms of state supervision have strayed from their original goal of providing constructive and rehabilitative alternatives to prison. They have become instead, Schiraldi argues, a "recidivism trap" for people trying to lead productive lives in the wake of a criminal conviction. 
   
   
   
  Schiraldi offers the first full and up-to-date account of these two key aspects of our criminal justice system, showing that these practices increase incarceration, have little impact on crime rates, and needlessly disrupt countless lives. Ultimately, he argues that they should be dramatically downsized or even abolished completely.
