Writing in response to the growing anti-Chinese sentiment and alarmed by the threat of war, Dr. David Daokui Li pulls from his wealth of firsthand experience to demystify contemporary Chinese society and advocate for understanding between China and the West. In this urgently needed and fascinating book, he explains the inner workings of a rising superpower to help the world understand how it works—and how to work with it.In Li's hands, an economic and political system that often baffles Westerners becomes coherent, sophisticated, and logical. He begins by explaining how two thousand years of history—from Confucian philosophy and ancient imperial dynasties to Communist Party chairmen from Mao to Deng Xiaoping—profoundly influence China's leadership today. Li brings the listener into high-level meetings he attended with figures including Xi Jinping, showing China's approach to governance. In demystifying contemporary Chinese society, Li helps listeners reconceptualize contemporary China and the implications of its growth. He asserts that China's rise will be beneficial for the global order, holding out the hope that with shared understanding and mutual learning the Chinese and Western systems will eventually find a way to peacefully coexist.

External interventions to mitigate crises or end conflicts have rarely succeeded. The EU and its member states, in particular, have repeatedly run up against their limits in the civil wars in Afghanistan, the Congo, Libya, Syria, the Sahel region and Yemen. However, the EU – if not the entire international community – have learned one lesson from their faltering peacebuilding efforts: If they are to have any chance of making a meaningful and lasting difference, they must develop and use comprehensive strategies that combine and coordinate the various tools available to diplomacy, development cooperation and security.
The 29 reports presented in this book – one for each EU member state as well as one on the EU as a whole – examine how steep the learning curve has been and, accordingly, how successful these bodies have been at forming new linkages among the various actors involved in external crisis and conflict management as well as within and between their institutions and organisations.
While the EU clearly still has a long way to go before it can live up to its rhetoric and become a distinct and effective actor on the foreign policy stage, small and incremental steps in reorganising institutional practise may help in narrowing the gap between words and deeds.
This volume provides examples of how the EU and its member states have found new organisational structures and procedures – specifically at the headquarters level – to better organise the necessary combination and coordination of the many tools available for crisis and conflict management. These ways are then juxtaposed in a 'big picture' chapter, which also identifies best practices for successful WGA implementation.

A guide to productive dialogue across ideological divides with practical tools for building trust, defusing hostility, and approaching hot-button topics.

With the election of President Biden, many liberals thought that the world of political discourse would somehow go back to normal. But the continued extremism of Republican politicians and conservative pundits has only stoked the flames of progressive disdain in ways that make it harder than ever to engage in civil debate.

In Beyond Contempt, Erica Etelson shows us how to communicate effectively across the political divide without soft-pedaling our beliefs—or playing into the hands of divisive politicians. Using Powerful Non-Defensive Communication skill sets, we can express ourselves in ways that inspire open-minded consideration instead of triggering defensive reactions. With detailed instruction and helpful examples, Etelson demonstrates how we can open hearts and minds in unexpected ways.

Throughout 2017 John Crace, the Guardian's parliamentary sketch writer, watched Prime Minister Theresa May's efforts to remain strong and stable—and, indeed, Prime Minister. He coined the term 'Maybot' for her malfunctioning public appearances. And now, in this edited collection of his unremittingly witty sketches, he tells the full story of Theresa May's turbulent first year in Westminster.
As waspishly hilarious as Craig Brown's diaries in Private Eye, I, Maybot is essential and hysterically funny reading for anyone trying to make sense of our crazy political year.

In this updated edition of his “utterly magnificent” social history, the Scottish parliamentarian examines the privatization of Scotland’s common land (Sunday Herald, UK). As an author, activist, and politician, Andy Wightman has made a career of fighting for Scottish land reform. In this provocative and influential book, Wightman offers a revealing analysis of how and why landowners got their hands on the millions of acres that were once held in common. He also tells the untold story of how the Scottish legal and political establishment appropriated land through legal fixes. Throughout, Wightman poses some provocative questions: Have attempts to redistribute power made any difference? What are the implications of the debt-fueled housing bubble, the Smith Commission, and the new Scottish Government's proposals on land reform? Can we get our common good land back? For all those with an interest in urban and rural land in Scotland, this edition of The Poor Had No Lawyers, updated with new statistics, provides a fascinating analysis of one the most important political questions in Scotland.

    All Things Possible - Setbacks...

    Andrew M. Cuomo

In this frank memoir—a story of duty, family, justice, politics, and resilience—Andrew Cuomo, New York State's fifty-sixth governor, reflects on his rise, fall, and rise again in politics, and the tough (but necessary) lessons he has learned along the way.Born to first-generation American parents in the working-class neighborhood of Queens, New York, Andrew M. Cuomo grew up in a family anchored by a shared belief in community, hard and honest work, and helping others. His father, Mario, led by example, as a tireless advocate for local residents, instilling in his son a passion for public service. From stapling up posters as a sixteen-year-old during his father's first political campaign to managing at twenty-five Mario's successful 1982 bid for New York State governor, Andrew Cuomo witnessed at a young age the power of politics to effect change for the common good. These experiences, reinforced by deeply held personal values, guided him, from novice campaign manager to visionary reform crusader to Clinton cabinet member—at thirty-nine—to groundbreaking governor of his home state. Laying out his unique approach to challenging the status quo, All Things Possible is not a traditional political memoir, but rather one man's revelatory reflection on a life defined by a commitment to public service, and the hard-won truths gleaned from both his struggles and his successes. In recounting his uphill battles to redefine the way America deals with homelessness, rehabilitate the legislative process in Albany, and bring marriage equality to New York, Cuomo presents an inspiring blueprint for greater political cooperation and efficacy. He also unflinchingly examines his failed 2002 gubernatorial bid, which heralded a dark period of political and personal turmoil, to illustrate why failure is inextricably bound up with success, why we should never forget where we come from, and the importance of balancing personal and professional commitments. And he proves, through all that he's achieved since his victory in the 2010 election, that our biggest triumphs lie not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. With 16-pages of color and black and white photos
