Summary

In 'The Lost Lemuria' by William Scott-Elliot, the reader is taken on a journey through the mysterious and mythical land of Lemuria, a lost continent believed to have once existed in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Scott-Elliot utilizes a blend of historical research, speculative fiction, and spiritual teachings to paint a vivid picture of this ancient civilization and its connection to modern-day societies. The book is written in a narrative style that captivates the reader's imagination and leaves them questioning the mysteries of Earth's distant past. As a pioneering work in the genre of alternative history, 'The Lost Lemuria' provides a thought-provoking exploration of forgotten cultures and their impact on the present. William Scott-Elliot, a theosophist and author, was deeply influenced by the spiritual and esoteric teachings of his time, which is evident in his writings. His fascination with lost civilizations and ancient wisdom shines through in 'The Lost Lemuria', making it a compelling read for those interested in occultism, metaphysics, and ancient history. Searching reflections on the crisis in Israel and Gaza by a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian of the Holocaust

Diary of a Crisis explores the past tumultuous and traumatic year in Israel-Palestine. The eminent historian Saul Friedländer began a diary of Israeli politics in January 2023 as the country was convulsed by protests against Netanyahu's attempt to overhaul the judiciary. Hundreds of thousands took to the streets to demonstrate against this threat to democracy. But the protests said nothing about the Palestinian question—the "elephant in the room," according to Friedländer, who resumed his diary after Hamas's October 7 assault on southern Israel. Israel was facing one of the worst crises in its history, he observes, under the worst possible internal conditions.

Friedländer weaves together profound reflections on a national history in which he has been an active participant. He describes how Prime Minister Golda Meir once flatly declared to him, "There is no Palestinian people." For Friedländer, on the other hand, the fight for democracy is inseparable from equality of treatment for Arab and Jewish citizens and an end to Israeli domination over Palestinians in the Occupied Territories. He argues that despite the continuing bloodshed, a two-state solution remains the only long-term answer to this most intractable of conflicts.

    Why People Die by Suicide

In the wake of a suicide, the most troubling questions are the most difficult to answer: How could we have known? What could we have done? And always: Why? Written by a clinical psychologist whose own life has been touched by suicide, this book offers the clearest account ever given of why some people choose to die.

Drawing on clinical and epidemiological evidence, as well as personal experience, Thomas Joiner brings a comprehensive understanding to seemingly incomprehensible behavior. Among the many people who have considered, attempted, or died by suicide, he finds three factors that mark those most at risk of death: the feeling of being a burden on loved ones; the sense of isolation; and, chillingly, the learned ability to hurt oneself. Joiner tests his theory against diverse facts taken from clinical anecdotes, history, literature, popular culture, anthropology, epidemiology, genetics, and neurobiology—facts about suicide rates among men and women; white and African-American men; anorexics, athletes, prostitutes, and physicians; members of cults, sports fans, and citizens of nations in crisis. The result is the most coherent and persuasive explanation ever given of why and how people overcome life's strongest instinct, self-preservation. Joiner's is a work that makes sense of the bewildering array of statistics and stories surrounding suicidal behavior.

Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, also known as Srila Prabhupāda, was a prominent spiritual leader and revivalist of the Gaudīya Vaisnava tradition in early 20th-century India. He was born Bimala Prasad Datt on 6 February 1874 in the town of Jagannath Puri, in the present-day state of Odisha, India. As a child, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati showed great intellectual potential, and he received a thorough education in Sanskrit, philosophy, and theology from his father, a renowned scholar, and Vaishnava monk. After completing his studies, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati became a professor of Sanskrit and philosophy at Calcutta University.

In 1918, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati founded the Gaudiya Math, a religious institution aimed at reviving and promoting the teachings of the Gaudīya Vaisnava tradition. He also initiated a series of reforms within the tradition, emphasizing the importance of scriptural study, the necessity of devotional service to Krishna, and the rejection of sectarianism and caste-based discrimination. Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati was a prolific writer and scholar who authored numerous books and articles on Vaisnava philosophy and theology. He also trained many disciples, including A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who later founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and became a major figure in the spread of the Hare Krishna movement in the West. Sarasvati passed away on 1 January 1937, but his legacy continues to inspire and guide followers of the Gaudīya Vaisnava tradition. He is remembered for his tireless efforts to revive and promote the teachings of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the founder of the Gaudīya Vaisnava tradition, and for his commitment to spreading the message of devotional service and love of God.
