Summary

In "The Old Humanities and the New Science," William Osler masterfully interweaves the worlds of the classical humanities with the burgeoning field of modern science. Through a series of eloquent essays, Osler engages with the philosophical underpinnings of medicine, emphasizing a holistic approach that values both the scientific method and the humanistic tradition. His literary style is characterized by rich narratives and insightful reflections, situated in a context where the turn of the 20th century witnessed an evolving understanding of medical practice, embodying a synthesis of knowledge that transcends mere empirical observation. William Osler, a revered physician and founding professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University, was instrumental in shaping contemporary medical education. His extensive background in both the humanities and the sciences endowed him with a unique perspective that informs this work. Osler's commitment to a broadened understanding of medicine was motivated by his belief in the importance of empathy and ethical responsibility, bridging the gap between the art of medicine and scientific inquiry. Readers seeking an enriching exploration of the interconnectedness of humanities and science will find Osler's essays both thought-provoking and inspiring. This book not only serves as a compelling invitation to reflect on the human aspects of medicine but also stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of integrating diverse fields of knowledge in an increasingly specialized world.

In literary circles of the mid-twentieth century, father and son, Ikbal and Idries Shah, spread seductive accounts of a mystical Middle East. Pitching themselves as the authentic voice of the Muslim world, they penned travelogues and exotic potboilers alongside weighty tomes on Islam and politics. Above all, father and son told Western readers what they wanted to hear: audacious yarns of eastern adventure and harmless Sufi mystics—myths that, as the century wore on and the Taliban seized power, became increasingly detached from reality.

This book follows the Shahs from their origins in colonial India to literary London, wartime Oxford, and counterculture California via the Levant, the League of Nations, and Latin America. Nile Green unravels the conspiracies and pseudonyms, fantastical pasts and self-aggrandizing anecdotes, high stakes and bold schemes that for nearly a century painted the defining portrait of Afghanistan. Ikbal and Idries convinced poets, spies, orientalists, diplomats, occultists, hippies, and even a prime minister that they held the key to understanding the Islamic world. From George Orwell directing Muslim propaganda to Robert Graves translating a fake manuscript of Omar Khayyam and Doris Lessing supporting jihad, Green tells the fascinating tale of how the book world was beguiled by the dream of an Afghan Shangri-La that never existed.

A critical analysis of how social and academic discourses treat disability and how they affect disabled lives.“This book breathes the poetics of disability life, a life that is consistently under threat, in a way that is complex, clear, highly accessible, and grounded in the politics of everyday life. For this reason, it may not be just that this book is highly teachable (which it is); this is a book that must be included in any disability studies, queer theory, and feminist theory curricula.” —Canadian Journal of Disability StudiesIn Feminist, Queer, Crip Alison Kafer imagines a different future for disability and disabled bodies. Challenging the ways in which ideas about the future and time have been deployed in the service of compulsory able-bodiedness and able-mindedness, Kafer rejects the idea of disability as a pre-determined limit. She juxtaposes theories, movements, and identities such as environmental justice, reproductive justice, cyborg theory, transgender politics, and disability that are typically discussed in isolation and envisions new possibilities for crip futures and feminist/queer/crip alliances. This bold book goes against the grain of normalization and promotes a political framework for a more just world.“Feminist, Queer, Crip makes significant contributions to our understanding of how disability works in the world, contributions that no other academic book in the recently emergent field of interdisciplinary disability studies has done so thoroughly.”―Journal of Literary and Cultural Disability Studies“Ambitious, doggedly interdisciplinary, and accessibly written. It retains political sharpness while remaining determinedly optimistic about queer/crip futures.”―QED“Kafer interrogates the ableist assumptions that pervade social and academic discourses and offers a critique of how these assumptions are put into practice in ways that directly affect the lives of people with disabilities. This is an original and comprehensive work that brings together disability studies, feminist theory, and queer theory.”―Licia Carlson, Providence College

The Overlife - A Tale of...

The author of this book, Diana Dirkby, is an Australian-born research mathematician who lives with paranoid schizophrenia, a severe brain disorder, as did her mother. The title, “The Overlife,” suggests that a diagnosis of schizophrenia can be the beginning of a new, worthwhile life and not simply the death of the hopes and dreams that preceded the diagnosis. This book gives a fictional account of a mother and daughter living with paranoid schizophrenia. We follow the widely disparate effects of this brain disorder on Sarah, the narrator, and her mother, Jodie. We also meet Dalaigh, Jodie’s husband and Sarah’s father, with his violent resentment at being trapped in a marriage he doesn’t want. By age eight, Sarah is Jodie’s caregiver and must negotiate her mother’s rapidly worsening mental health and her father’s white-hot fury. The weight of these adult conflicts on the shoulders of one so young seems impossible to bear.
