Summary

Follow the rise and fall of an Irish rogue in this picaresque masterpiece that exposes the hollow core of the aristocracy. The narrator, a charming but amoral adventurer, recounts his exploits in dueling, gambling, and marrying into wealth with a total lack of self-awareness regarding his own villainy. Through his unreliable voice, the novel offers a cynical view of the Seven Years' War and the decadent courts of Europe. It is a brilliant study of a scoundrel that challenges the reader to find sympathy for a man who deserves none.

This installment of Alexandra Ripley's Old South saga— begun in the bestselling Charleston— traces the lives of the prominent South Carolina Tradd family from the turn of the century to 1935. From an ugly duckling love child, Garden Tradd became the glorious belle her mother, Margaret, had longed to be. With breathtaking abandon and dazzling innocence, Garden dances through Paris, London, and New York as the twenties roar— until betrayal turns the glitter to bitter ash— until vengeful secrets of the past send her home to Charleston, a city waiting to embrace its own or exact revenge.

There is something about the number 3.
The Ancient Greeks believed 3 was the perfect number, and in China 3 has always been a lucky number, and they know a thing or two.
Most religions also have 3 this and 3 that and, of course, in these more modern times, three’s a crowd may be too many, except when it’s a ménage à trois. It seems good things usually come in threes.
Whatever history and culture says WE think 3, a hat-trick of stories, is a great number to explore themes and literary avenues that classic authors were so adept at creating.
