Summary

It is impossible to approach Constantinople without seeing the beauty and the wonder of its site. Whether you pass rapidly down the Bosphorus, between banks crowned with towers and houses and mosques, that stretch away hither and thither to distant hills, now bleak, now crowned with dark cypress groves; or up from the Sea of Marmora, watching the dome of S. Sophia that glitters above the closely packed houses, till you turn the point which brings you to the Golden Horn, crowded with shipping and bright with the flags of many nations; or even if you come overland by the sandy wastes along the shore, looking across the deep blue of the sea to the islands and the snow-crowned mountains of Asia, till you break through the crumbling wall within sight of the Golden Gate, and find yourself at a step deep in the relics of the middle ages; you cannot fail to wonder at the splendour of the view which meets your eyes. Sea, sunlight, the quaint houses that stand close upon the water's edge, the white palaces, the crowded quays, and the crowning glory of the Eastern domes and the mediæval walls—these are the  elements that combine to impress, and the impression is never lost. Often as you may see again the approach to the imperial city, its splendour and dignity and the exquisite beauty of colour and light will exert their old charm, and as you put foot in the New Rome you will feel all the glamour of the days that are gone by.

Fanny Price, in Mansfield Park, tells her persistent suitor that 'we have all a better guide in ourselves...than any other person can be'. Sometimes, however, we crave external guidance: and when this happens we could do worse than seek it in Jane Austen's own subtle novels. Written to coincide with Austen's 250th birthday, this approachable and intimate work shows why and how - for over half a century - Austen has inspired and challenged its author through different phases of her life. Part personal memoir, part expert interaction with all the letters, manuscripts and published novels, Janet Todd's book reveals what living with Jane Austen has meant to her and what it might also mean to others. Todd celebrates the undimmable power of Austen's work to help us understand our own bodies and our environment, and teach us about patience, humour, beauty and the meaning of home.

"The Theory of Moral Sentiments" is a book written by Adam Smith, a Scottish philosopher and economist who lived from 1723 to 1790. First published in 1759, the book is considered one of the most important works in the field of moral philosophy.
In the book, Smith explores the nature of morality and the role of sympathy and empathy in human interactions. He argues that human beings are naturally inclined to feel sympathy for others, and that this sympathy forms the basis of moral judgments. He also discusses the concept of the "impartial spectator," an imagined observer who helps us to judge the morality of our own actions.
Smith's ideas in "The Theory of Moral Sentiments" have had a profound impact on fields beyond moral philosophy, including economics and political theory. In his later work, "The Wealth of Nations," Smith developed his ideas on the nature of markets and the division of labor, which have become foundational concepts in modern economics.
Overall, "The Theory of Moral Sentiments" is a key work in the development of Western moral philosophy, and is still widely studied and debated today.

Populism, as a political ideology and movement, is rooted in the idea of a fundamental divide between "the people" and "the elite." It asserts that the common people, often portrayed as hardworking and morally upright, are being oppressed or ignored by an elite class of politicians, businessmen, and intellectuals who are perceived as self-serving and out of touch with the needs of the general public. The term "populism" has evolved over time and can be used to describe a range of political movements and leaders who claim to represent the interests of the ordinary person against established powers. However, despite its widespread usage, the definition of populism remains fluid, often shaped by the context in which it is used.
Historically, populism has roots in 19th-century agrarian movements in the United States and Europe. In the United States, for instance, the Populist Party emerged in the late 1800s as a response to the economic struggles of farmers, advocating for policies such as free silver and the direct election of senators. Similarly, in Europe, populist movements often arose in opposition to industrialization and the concentration of wealth and power in the hands of the elites. These early forms of populism focused on economic issues and the struggle of the working class and rural populations against the powerful urban elites and industrialists.
In modern times, populism has become more varied and globalized, often adapting to the specific cultural, economic, and political climates of different countries. Contemporary populist movements often capitalize on discontent with globalization, rising inequality, and the perceived failures of traditional political elites to address the concerns of ordinary citizens. The populist playbook has expanded to include a wide array of strategies, from fiery rhetoric and social media manipulation to direct attacks on democratic institutions and the media.

Black women continue to have a complex and convoluted relationship with their hair.

From grammar and high schools to corporate boardrooms and military squadrons, Black and Afro Latina natural hair continues to confound, transfix, and enrage members of White American society. Why, in 2022, is this still the case? Why have we not moved beyond that perennial racist emblem? And why are women so disproportionately affected?

Why does our hair become most palatable when it capitulates, and has been subjugated, to resemble Caucasian features as closely as possible? Who or what is responsible for the web of supervision and surveillance of our hair? Who in our society gets to author the prevailing constitution of professional appearance?

Particularly relevant during this time of emboldened White supremacy, racism, and provocative othering, this work explores how writing about one of the still-remaining systemic biases in schools, academia, and corporate America might lead to greater understanding and respect.

This WWII history sheds light on the operations and combat experiences of Hitler’s “armored infantry”. As the foot soldiers who went into battle alongside the Third Reich’s fearsome tanks, the panzergrenadiers occupied a unique position in the German war machine. Whether in the Wehrmacht or Waffen-SS, these troops endured all the horrors of infantry combat—fighting hand-to-hand, storming enemy positions, and rescuing fallen comrades—but they did so in the shadow of thundering armored fighting vehicles like the Tiger and Panther.   In Panzergrenadier Aces, Franz Kurowski vividly recounts many of these soldier’s most dramatic stories, offering a rare window into their role in the larger conflict while bringing them and their actions to life.
