Summary

The Father of English painting, William Hogarth aspired to an art that would engage and delight ordinary citizens, rather than educated connoisseurs and critics, whom he despised. He achieved this ambition by creating a new type of painting, a comic strip-like series of pictures called ‘modern moral subjects’. Famous examples such as ‘A Harlot's Progress’, ‘A Rake's Progress’ and ‘Marriage A-la-Mode’ were reproduced en masse as popular engravings and were accessible to all. His work also provided a visual influence to the satirical works of England’s great men of letters. More importantly, Hogarth’s extraordinary achievement of securing a Copyright Act would benefit countless artists in all media to the present day. Delphi’s Masters of Art Series presents the world’s first digital e-Art books, allowing readers to explore the works of great artists in comprehensive detail. This volume presents Hogarth’s complete paintings in beautiful detail, with concise introductions, hundreds of high quality images and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1)

Its straightforward explanations of core critical concepts, practical advice, and technical, visual, and aesthetic aspects anchor the listener's understanding of the formal language and anatomy of film and the techniques of film analysis. The second edition of this bestselling book adds two new chapters: "Film and Ideology," which covers how to read a film's political and social content, and other key topics in film theory, and "Film Studies in the Age of Digital Cinema," which explores the central problems of studying film when "film" itself is no longer the medium.

Phil Cousineau has found that as early as 1400 B.C. - and probably much earlier - competitive games anchored communities, created a diversion from violence, and even contributed to the evolution of the human body, mind, and soul. "This desire to shine brightly," says Cousineau, "at least in one moment in your life, either on the battlefield or on the Olympic grounds, is a deep, deep urge in us."

Ben Greenman, New York Times bestselling author, contributing writer to the New Yorker, and owner of thousands of recordings of Prince and Prince-related songs, knows intimately that there has never been a rock star as vibrant, mercurial, willfully contrary, experimental, or prolific as Prince. Uniting a diverse audience while remaining singularly himself, Prince was a tireless artist, a musical virtuoso and chameleon, and a pop-culture prophet who shattered traditional ideas of race and gender, rewrote the rules of identity, and redefined the role of sex in pop music.A polymath in his own right who collaborated with George Clinton and Questlove on their celebrated memoirs, Greenman has been listening to and writing about Prince since the mid-eighties. Here, with the passion of an obsessive fan and the skills of a critic, journalist, and novelist, he mines his encyclopedic knowledge of Prince’s music to tell both his story and the story of the paradigm-shifting ideas that he communicated to his millions of fans around the world.

“Compelling case studies demonstrate how African workshops have long mediated collective expression and individual imagination.” —Allen F. Roberts, University of California, Los Angeles

The role of the workshop in the creation of African art is the subject of this revelatory book. In the group setting of the workshop, innovation and imitation collide, artists share ideas and techniques, and creative expression flourishes. African Art and Agency in the Workshop examines the variety of workshops, from those which are politically driven or tourist oriented, to those based on historical patronage or allied to current artistic trends. Fifteen lively essays explore the impact of the workshop on the production of artists such as Zimbabwean stone sculptors, master potters from Cameroon, wood carvers from Nigeria, and others from across the continent.

Contributions by Nicolas Argenti, Jessica Gershultz, Norma Wolff, Christine Scherer, Silvia Forni, Elizabeth Morton, Alexander Bortolot, Brenda Schmahmann, Chika Okeke-Agulu, Karen E. Milbourne and Namubiru Rose Kirumira

“A closer examination of the workshop provides important insights into art histories and cultural politics. We may think we know what we mean when we use the term ‘workshop,’ but in fact the organization of groups of artists takes on vastly different forms and encourages the production of diverse styles of art within larger social structures and power dynamics.” —Victoria Rovine, University of Florida

“Taken as a whole, the case studies provide a wide window into the very diverse structural and functional characteristics of workshops. They also clearly describe how African workshops have served both contemporary political and cultural needs and have responded to patronage, whether it be traditional or stimulated by tourism.” —African Studies Review
