Summary

In "The Home-life of Borneo Head-hunters: Its Festivals and Folk-lore," William Henry Furness offers an insightful exploration of the rich cultural tapestry of the Iban people of Borneo. With meticulous detail, Furness delves into the everyday lives, rituals, and customs that define this indigenous community, crafting a narrative that is both anthropological and vividly evocative. The book intertwines personal observation with scholarly inquiry, reflecting the Victorian-era fascination with exotic cultures while pioneering early ethnographic methodology. Through festivals, myths, and local beliefs, Furness captures the essence of a society deeply woven into the natural world, highlighting their head-hunting practices within a broader context of tribal identity and spiritual beliefs. William Henry Furness was an American author and ethnologist, whose varied experiences, including his missionary work in the Pacific Islands, profoundly influenced his perspective on indigenous cultures. Furness possessed a genuine curiosity about the customs and narratives of the peoples he encountered, utilizing his extensive travels and interactions to inform his writings. This book represents his commitment to documenting and understanding the social structures and cultural significances of communities often overlooked in mainstream discourse. For anyone interested in anthropology, folklore, or the intricate dynamics of tribal societies, "The Home-life of Borneo Head-hunters" is an essential read. The Mutapa Empire, also known as the Kingdom of Mutapa, emerged in the 15th century as a powerful Shona state in southern Africa. Its origins are deeply rooted in the earlier civilizations of the region, particularly the Kingdom of Great Zimbabwe, from which it inherited its political structures, trade networks, and cultural traditions. As Great Zimbabwe began to decline due to overpopulation, resource depletion, and internal conflicts, new centers of power arose, with Mutapa becoming the most dominant.
According to oral tradition, the empire was founded by a prince named Nyatsimba Mutota, who left Great Zimbabwe in search of new resources, particularly salt. His journey led him northward, where he conquered smaller communities and established a new political center. Mutota’s leadership allowed him to unite different groups under his rule, forming the early foundations of the Mutapa Empire. His successors, particularly his son Matope, expanded the empire further, consolidating power over a vast territory that included present-day Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and parts of Zambia and South Africa.
The name “Mutapa” itself carries significant meaning, often interpreted as “conqueror” or “master pillager,” reflecting the empire’s expansionist nature. The title “Mwene Mutapa” was given to its rulers, signifying supreme authority over both the people and the land. Under this leadership, the empire became highly centralized, with the Mwene Mutapa holding absolute power while relying on regional chiefs to manage local governance. This political structure allowed for effective control over its vast territories and trade networks.

Vladimir Lenin lies in a tomb in Moscow's Red Square. History has not been kind to this Russian leader, his teachings reviled by modern mainstream politics. But in today's capitalist society, riven by class inequality and imperialist wars, perhaps it is worth returning to this communist icon's demand for "Peace, Land and Bread", and his radical understanding of democracy.

Lenin was wrestling with the question of "what is to be done?" when facing the catastrophes of his own time. Against the odds, the Bolshevik party succeeded in rejecting both the corrupt and decaying Romanov dynasty, as well as the capitalist economic system which had started to take root in Russia.

To understand how this happened, and what we can learn from him today, Paul Le Blanc takes us through Lenin's dynamic revolutionary thought, how he worked as part of a larger collective, and how he centered the labor movement in Russia and beyond, uncovering a powerful form of democracy that could transform our activism today.

Brought to you by Altrusian Grace Media and narrated by Matthew Schmitz. Jung's primary concern in Flying Saucers is not with the reality or unreality of UFOs but with their psychic aspect. Rather than speculate about their possible nature and extraterrestrial origin as alleged spacecraft, he asks what it may signify that these phenomena, whether real or imagined, are seen in such numbers just at a time when humankind is menaced as never before in history. The UFOs represent, in Jung's phrase, "a modern myth."
