This collection spans a broad range of literary styles, from the meticulous scientific observations found in early geological treatises to more narrative-driven explorations of Earth's physical history. The anthology compiles diverse works that have significantly shaped understanding of geological phenomena, such as the formation of the Earth's crust and the processes governing rock formation. With its inclusion of seminal essays and comprehensive geological surveys, it serves as both an intellectual journey through time and a captivating exploration of Earth's dynamic landscapes. The contributors to this collection, including esteemed figures like William Harmon Norton and Charles Sir Lyell, represent the pinnacles of geological scholarship. This assembly of authors transcends time, stretching from Sir John William Dawson's pioneering 19th-century research to Frederic Brewster Loomis's 20th-century insights. The anthology mirrors the progression of geological thought and aligns with the cultural shifts and scientific advancements that accompanied the Industrial Revolution and subsequent technological progress. Rocks and Ridges offers an unparalleled glimpse into the minds shaping geological science, making it an essential read. It provides an extraordinary opportunity for both students and enthusiasts of geology to immerse themselves in the multifaceted discourse of Earth's physical history. A treasure trove of illuminating and entertaining quotations from the legendary naturalistHere is Charles Darwin in his own words—the naturalist, traveler, scientific thinker, and controversial author of On the Origin of Species, the book that shook the Victorian world. Featuring hundreds of quotations carefully selected by world-renowned Darwin biographer Janet Browne, The Quotable Darwin draws from Darwin’s writings, letters to friends and family, autobiographical reminiscences, and private scientific notebooks. It offers a multifaceted portrait that takes readers through his youth, the famous voyage of the Beagle, the development of his thoughts about evolution, his gradual loss of religious faith, and the time spent turning his ideas into a well-articulated theory about the natural origin of all living beings—a theory that dangerously included the origin of humans. The Quotable Darwin also includes many of the key responses to Darwin’s ideas from figures across the social spectrum, scientists and nonscientists alike—and criticism too. We see Darwin as an innovative botanist and geologist, an affectionate husband and father, and a lively correspondent who once told his cousin that he liked to play billiards because “it drives the horrid species out of my head.” This book gives us an intimate look at Darwin at work, at home, as a public figure, and on his travels.Complete with a chronology of Darwin’s life by Browne, The Quotable Darwin provides an engagingly fresh perspective on a remarkable man who was always thinking deeply about the natural world.

Fame often appears as a glittering prize, something to be coveted and pursued at any cost. Celebrities are lauded for their talent, beauty, and achievements, but behind the glossy magazine covers and red carpet events, fame can be a dangerous, even destructive force. The allure of stardom is frequently overshadowed by the realities that accompany it. The pressure to maintain a flawless public image, the constant scrutiny by the media, and the loss of privacy can all take a heavy toll on the individual behind the celebrity persona.
One of the most evident aspects of fame’s dark side is the relentless invasion of privacy. Celebrities are often followed, photographed, and filmed at all times, even in the most personal moments of their lives. The public’s insatiable thirst for information about their every move can lead to an overwhelming sense of isolation and anxiety. Even the smallest misstep is amplified, with celebrities often finding themselves under harsh judgment for things that would be overlooked in the lives of everyday people. The fear of being misrepresented or misunderstood is a constant source of stress.
Beyond the constant media attention, there is also the mental and emotional toll of maintaining a perfect public persona. The expectation to be both flawless and likable can create an intense pressure to conform to a specific image. Celebrities often feel the need to present a life that is far from reality, masking struggles and imperfections for the sake of maintaining their status. Many celebrities suffer from mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, and loneliness, as they grapple with the weight of their fame and the desire to meet impossible expectations.

Mary Rackham was born in Norwich on 14th August 1848 to a merchant family. Little is known of her early life and her biography only re-appears in September 1871 with marriage to Fairman Joseph Mann, a farmer with 800 acres.

Mary moved to Shropham, Norfolk and became involved with the workhouse, visiting the sick and other unfortunates of the parish, her observations and experiences a valuable source for her later stories.

She took up writing, partly to offset the dreary village life of her surroundings, in the 1880s and published her first novel, ‘The Parish of Hilby’ (1883) at her own expense. It was well received by the critics.

Thus began a career that spanning three decades provided thirty-three novels, hundreds of short stories, and fourteen plays.  Her work was largely focused on rural life in Norfolk and centered on the fictional town of Dulditch, with grim but authentic accounts of poverty and deprivation.

Her marriage produced one boy and three girls. With her husband's death in 1913, she moved to Sheringham.

She is regarded as a major contributor to East Anglian literature with particular praise given to her short stories.

Mary E Mann died on 19th May 1929. She was 80. Her grave-marker is a carved open book with the epitaph ‘We bring our years to an end, as if it were a tale that is told’.

Life in ‘Ben Pitcher's Elly’ is degrading, awful and unvarnished. The chances of this young girl having a happy life are remote but her story must be heard.
