Sinopse

In "Belgian Fairy Tales," William Elliot Griffis presents a captivating anthology that uncovers the rich tapestry of Belgium's folklore. This collection, written in the late 19th century, reflects Griffis's keen interest in cultural narratives and their capacity to convey moral lessons through enchanting tales. The literary style is characterized by a blend of lyrical prose and engaging storytelling, capturing the whimsical essence of traditional fables while immersing the reader in the vivid landscapes and idiosyncratic characters of Belgian culture. Each tale serves not only as entertainment but also as a vehicle for exploring themes of virtue, justice, and the human condition, aligning with the era'Äôs growing fascination with national identity and folklore preservation. William Elliot Griffis was a notable American author and educator with a profound passion for cross-cultural literature. His experiences living abroad and a deep curiosity about the customs and stories of different societies drove him to curate these fairy tales. By drawing on his scholarly background and linguistic skills, Griffis sought to introduce Western audiences to the enchanting narratives of Belgium, thus enriching the global literary landscape. "Belgian Fairy Tales" is highly recommended for those who appreciate folklore, culture, and the timeless allure of fairy tales. Readers will find in this collection not only delightful stories but also a glimpse into the values and traditions of a vibrant culture, making it a valuable addition to any literary library.

Fíasól is a seven-year-old crab living in Green Grove in Grasby. Well, she is not actually a crab. She is a girl born in the Cancer star sign, and in her opinion that stinks. So she’s decided to adopt a brand new star sign for herself, it’s called the Flowery Butterfly and is a sign made specially for people who don’t want to be Cancerians.
She lives in Green Grove with her mum and dad, her big sisters Pippa and Bidda, and a couple of poodles, Hansína and Jensína.
Fíasól’s best friend is called Ingo. He is nine years old and lives in the house diagonally opposite hers. Harold, Herbert and Heba live in the house directly opposite. They are also specially good friends of Fíasól’s.
“I’ll never have to leave Green Grove,” Fíasól sometimes says. “I’ve got all my friends here, my stuff, my bed, and the food of course.”
“You’ll need to go to school,” her ten-year-old sister Pippa retorts.
“Yeah, but then I’ll come straight back home because everything I need is here,” Fíasól replies.
“What if you need to see the doctor?” Pippa asks.
“Then I’ll just make a call and get the doctor to come and see me here,” Fíasól says.
“But what if…” Pippa continues, and so it goes on, the sisters bickering day in and day out.
“Oh, I have such an amazingly big imagination,” Fíasól sometime says, sounding pleased with herself. She is right of course.
“You are queen of your very own enormous imagination,” Fíasól’s mum says to her. “But you’ll have to be careful not to let your ideas fly so high that you lose track of them and they come to a sticky end.”
If you live in a big world of imagination you’re either doing just fine, or you’re in trouble. The thing is, it’s often so difficult to recognise whether an idea is good or bad. Good ideas can get you into trouble and bad ideas can look as if they’re rather good, to start with.

From armed bodyguard to galley slave, from loving husband and father to fiery preacher, John Knox was moved by a relentless passion for the honor of God and the purity of His truth and worship. Yet when he was a schoolboy growing up in the small Scottish town of Haddington, he could never have imagined that he would become a major leader of the powerful movement that transformed Scotland into one of the most committed Protestant countries in the world. Simonetta Carr tells the story of how this great Reformer, whose life began humbly, in a faraway, mysterious part of the world, influenced the church and its beliefs far beyond the borders of Scotland, shaping our thinking still today.
