Summary

William Drummond of Hawthornden was the first notable poet in Scotland to write in English, as well as the first to use the canzone, a medieval Italian metrical form in English verse. He was a cultured and detached man of means, who became close friends with the poet Michael Drayton and the playwright Ben Jonson. He also wrote one of the most celebrated prose essays of the seventeenth century, ‘A Cypresse Grove’, serving as a compelling meditation on death and mutability. The Delphi Poets Series offers readers the works of literature’s finest poets, with superior formatting. “The poems are so deliciously bad that they’re fun . . . it might just be that there’s a little bit of serious poetry play giggling behind the scenes.” —Los Angeles Times

Forget Shakespeare. Don’t count on Donne. Shelley and Keats: banished! And there’s absolutely no poet laureate from the golden or any other age. So fawning PhDs in love with little-understood verses by long-dead writers should go elsewhere. This is poetry for the rest of us—bad poetry!

Pamela Russell’s unexalted (but thoroughly hysterical) poems mock, chide, accuse, tease, joke, undermine, point, and laugh at the world around us—and at anything that takes itself too seriously. Her non-canonical oeuvre includes: Tea for Two (A Tragedy); Nietzsche and the Ice-Cream Truck; Capitalism Can Fall Not Like I Fell for You; Inappropriately Touched by an Angel; Love Is Like a Toilet Bowl; and many more.

For the time of his story Mr. Parker has chosen the most absorbing period of the romantic eighteenth-century history of Quebec. The curtain rises soon after General Braddock's defeat in Virginia, and the hero, a prisoner in Quebec, curiously entangled in the intrigues of La Pompadour, becomes a part of a strange history, full of adventure and the stress of peril, which culminates only after Wolfe's victory over Montcalm. The material offered by the life and history of old Quebec has never been utilized for the purposes of fiction with the command of plot and incident, the mastery of local color, and the splendid realization of dramatic situations shown in this distinguished and moving romance. The illustrations preserve the atmosphere of the text, for they present the famous buildings, gates, and battle grounds as they appeared at the time of the hero's imprisonment in Quebec. Hollywood is indelibly printed in our minds as the ‘go-to’ place for entertainment and has been for decades. When there really did seem to be more stars in Hollywood than in Heaven Hollywood Stage had them performing films as radio plays – on the sponsors dime of course. Classic films now become audiobooks with many featuring the original stars from way back when. Here's Captain Horation Hornblower starring Gregory Peck & Virginia Mayo.

The most celebrated plays of ancient Athens in vivid, dynamic new translations by award-winning poets Robert Bagg & James Scully.

The dominant Athenian playwright in fifth-century BCE Athens, Sophocles left us seven powerful dramas that still shock as they render the violence that erupts within divinity and humankind. Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Kolonos, and Antigone trace three generations of a family manipulated by the inscrutably vindictive god Apollo to commit patricide, incest, and kin murder. Elektra and Women of Trakhis begin as studies of women obsessed with hatred and desire but become dissenting critiques of the Greeks’ enthusiasm for revenge and ego-crazed heroics. Two hard-hitting dramas set in war zones, Aias and Philoktetes, use conflicts among Greek warriors at Troy to thrash out political and ethical crises confronting Athenian society itself.

These translations, modern in idiom while faithful to the Greek and already proven stageworthy, preserve depth and subtlety of Sophocles’ characters and refresh and clarify his narratives. Their focus on communities under extreme stress still resonates deeply for us here and now. This is Sophocles for a new generation entering the turbulent arena of ancient Greek drama.

Praise for The Complete Plays of Sophocles

“Bagg’s Oedipus plays and Scully’s remarkable Aias are as finely wrought as one could desire, but they have a spare impact which gets across the moment-by-moment emotion of the plays, and makes plain the moral or political themes.” —Richard Wilbur, former U.S. Poet Laureate, winner of the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize

“Bagg and Scully’s renderings strike me as the most performable versions of Sophocles I’ve ever encountered . . . if you’re looking for the translation that best reflects the emotional force and expressive range of the original plays, you would be hard pressed to do better.” —Philadelphia Inquirer

LibriVox volunteers bring you 19 different recordings of A Pinch of Salt by Robert Graves. Perhaps now best known as the author whose book of the same name inspired the Masterpiece Theater series I, Claudius, Robert Graves wrote prolifically throughout his 90 years, concentrating on myth in a scholarly vein. Many of his works were academically controversial. And yet, first and foremost, he considered himself a poet. This poem, which first appeared in 1920, shows Graves to be not only a careful and cautious man, but also exceedingly passionate (Summary by Alan Davis-Drake). This was the weekly poetry project for the week of June 3rd, 2007.
