Synopsis

William Drummond of Hawthornden was the first notable poet in Scotland to write in English, as well as the first to use the canzone, a medieval Italian metrical form in English verse. He was a cultured and detached man of means, who became close friends with the poet Michael Drayton and the playwright Ben Jonson. He also wrote one of the most celebrated prose essays of the seventeenth century, ‘A Cypresse Grove’, serving as a compelling meditation on death and mutability. "Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore— While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping—rapping at my chamber door. "Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door — Only this and nothing more." Those sonorous and somber words of Edgar Allan Poe that begin The Raven are part of most everyone's fond educational memories. Beautiful and haunting to hear and even more fun to read aloud. In this recording I have just attempted to express my enjoyment of the beauty in some favorite Poe poems. Beside The Raven, there are Alone; A Dream Within A Dream; Annabel Lee; City In the Sea; The Bells; A Dream Within a Dream; Annabel Lee; Dreamland; Evening Star; Lenore; Eldorado; A Valentine and "The Happiest Day". Hopefully listeners will enjoy hearing them half as much as I enjoyed the selfish pleasure of recording them.

Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was born on the 16th October 1854 in Dublin Ireland. The son of Dublin intellectuals Oscar proved himself an outstanding classicist at Dublin, then at Oxford. With his education complete Wilde moved to London and its fashionable cultural and social circles. With his biting wit, flamboyant dress, and glittering conversation, Wilde became one of the most well-known personalities of his day.
His only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray was published in 1890 and he then moved on to writing for the stage with Salome in 1891. His society comedies produced enormous hits and turned him into one of the most successful writers of late Victorian London.
Whilst his masterpiece, ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, was on stage in London, Wilde had the Marquess of Queensberry, the father of his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, prosecuted for libel. The trial unearthed evidence that caused Wilde to drop his charges and led to his own arrest and trial for gross indecency. He was convicted and imprisoned for two years' hard labour. It was to break him.
On release he left for France. There he wrote his last work, ‘The Ballad of Reading Gaol’ in 1898. He died destitute in Paris at the age of forty-six sipping champagne a friend had brought with the line ‘Alas I am dying beyond my means’.

It is a poignant window into the things that so often go unspoken, the elephants in the rooms of our families. Readers who have experienced what it means to be the outsider or scapegoat in their family of origin will be uplifted by this vision of how to break cycles of abuse and reclaim themselves through therapeutic and artistic journeys.Songs for My Father is at times dark, at times uplifting, and always deeply human.

A door slams, and the echoes never fade. Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House (1879) is a play that doesn't shout—it lingers, unsettling and undeniable. Beneath the surface of a seemingly ordinary household lies a quiet storm, gathering strength with every polite exchange, every carefully placed smile.
Nora Helmer is a wife, a mother, a woman adored. Her home is warm, her life is comfortable, her husband sings her praises. But when a long-kept secret begins to unravel, so does the delicate balance of her world. What happens when the roles we play no longer fit? When the words we speak don't match the voices inside us?
Ibsen doesn't lecture, doesn't plead—he simply opens a door and lets us look inside. What we see is up to us. Is it a tale of liberation or betrayal? A tragedy or a beginning? More than a century later, the questions still stand, just as urgent, just as sharp.
With A Doll's House, Ibsen didn't just write a play. He set a stage for countless conversations, forcing audiences to lean in, to question, to wonder. And when the final moment comes, when the door closes behind Nora, it isn't just her world that shifts. It's ours, too.

The Beauty Of The Husband is an essay on Keats's idea that beauty is truth, and is also the story of a marriage. It is told in twenty-nine tangos. A tango (like a marriage) is something you have to dance to the end. This clear-eyed, brutal, moving, darkly funny book tells a single story in an immediate, accessible voice–twenty-nine "tangos" of narrative verse that take us vividly through erotic, painful, and heartbreaking scenes from a long-time marriage that falls apart. Only award-winning poet Anne Carson could create a work that takes on the oldest of lyrical subjects–love–and make it this powerful, this fresh, this devastating.
