Summary

In "Governor Bradford's First Dialogue," William Bradford presents a compelling narrative that captures the essence of early colonial life in America, framed through a series of dialogues that reveal the complexities of governance, community, and survival. The text is imbued with a reflective and didactic literary style, characteristic of Bradford's Puritan background, resonating with the theological underpinnings and socio-political concerns of the 17th century. As a primary historical source, it offers invaluable insights into the societal dynamics and philosophical debates that shaped the foundations of American society, making it essential for both historical and literary examinations of the period. William Bradford, a pivotal figure in American history, served as the governor of the Plymouth Colony and was a keen chronicler of its struggles and successes. His personal journey, laden with experiences of dislocation and resilience as a Separatist fleeing religious persecution in England, equipped him with the knowledge and perspective necessary to navigate the tumultuous landscape of New World colonization. His commitment to documenting his community's experiences not only reflects his leadership role but also his desire to preserve their story against the backdrop of a rapidly changing world. "Governor Bradford's First Dialogue" is an essential read for scholars and enthusiasts alike, offering a rare blend of personal narrative and community discourse. It invites readers to explore early American thought and the moral dilemmas faced by its leaders, making it a significant contribution to the ongoing discourse on colonial identity and governance. “A penetrating reconstruction of the most disturbing and crucial slave uprising in America’s history.” —New York Times
The definitive account of the most infamous slave rebellion in history and the aftermath that brought America one step closer to civil war—newly reissued to include the text of the original 1831 court document ""The Confessions of Nat Turner""
The fierce slave rebellion led by Nat Turner in Virginia in 1831 and the savage reprisals that followed shattered beyond repair the myth of the contented slave and the benign master, and intensified the forces of change that would plunge America into the bloodbath of the Civil War. Stephen B. Oates, the celebrated biographer of Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr., presents a gripping and insightful narrative of the rebellion—the complex, gifted, and driven man who led it, the social conditions that produced it, and the legacy it left.
A classic, here is the dramatic re-creation of the turbulent period that marked a crucial turning point in America's history.

Creating a Nation That Is Fair for Us All
Cindy Mathers has experienced firsthand the impact of our traumatised, fragmented and broken systems on First Nations people, and indeed us all. She has been mentored by and worked collaboratively with First Nations people for over two decades, learning through respect, deep listening, and truth telling.
After repeated experiences of burnout, she began searching for solutions outside of current systems. Through personal and ancestral healing, extensive research, and study, she learned that the disrespect and disregard of human rights of the First Nations people at the time of colonization created wounds that remain in our collective psyche and are passed down through generations.
In DELVE-ing into Cultural Humility, Mathers shares a learning pathway forward, based on respect and deep listening. She created the DELVE formula as a collaborative way to implement change in our nation:
    ●       Deconstruct—how did we get here as a nation?
    ●       Explore—the impact of abuse of Human Rights on us all
    ●       Listen—and learn, with deep presence to the stories of First Nations people
    ●       Viable—what First Nations-led / collaborative initiatives are working?
    ●       Energise—what works and fund community-led, place-based initiatives
In these pages, you will see a snapshot of what is possible when we engage the DELVE formula. By applying this pathway to her real-life projects and experiences, Mathers has created a succinct and practical resource for those who wish to learn Cultural Humility and become part of creating a new nation that respects the Human Rights of all.

"That government is best which governs least" is the famous opening line of this essay. The slavery crisis inflamed New England in the 1840s and 1850s. The environment became especially tense after the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. A lifelong abolitionist, Thoreau delivered an impassioned speech which would later become Civil Disobedience in 1848, just months after leaving Walden Pond. The speech dealt with slavery, but at the same time excoriated American imperialism, particularly the Mexican–American War. Thoreau asserts that because governments are typically more harmful than helpful, they therefore cannot be justified. Democracy is no cure for this, as majorities simply by virtue of being majorities do not also gain the virtues of wisdom and justice. The judgment of an individual's conscience is not necessarily inferior to the decisions of a political body or majority, and so "[i]t is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right. The only obligation which I have a right to assume is to do at any time what I think right.... Law never made men a whit more just; and, by means of their respect for it, even the well-disposed are daily made the agents of injustice." He adds, "I cannot for an instant recognize as my government [that] which is the slave's government also.

When Columbus claimed to have discovered America in 1492, and the Borgia Pope claimed it as a New World for Catholic Spain, the Vatican started a 500 hundred year conspiracy to conceal the true story of Viking America. In this groundbreaking work by the author of The Early English Settlement of Orkney and Shetland, the true extent of the Viking discovery and colonization of the eastern seaboard of America is fully examined, taking into account the new archaeological, linguistic, and DNA evidence which supplements the historic account. For four centuries or more, from their first visits around AD 1000 to the eve of the Columbus voyages, the Vikings explored and settled thousands of miles of the coasts and rivers of North America.

From New York's Long Island to the Canadian High Arctic, the New World was a playground for Viking adventurers. And the name the Vikings gave to this New World—America.
