Summary

Armadale by Wilkie Collins is a novel by Wilkie Collins, first published in 1864–66. It is the third of his four 'great novels' of the 1860s: after The Woman in White (1859–60) and No Name (1862), and before The Moonstone (1868).

In the German spa town of Wildbad, the 'Scotchman' Mr. Neal is asked to transcribe the deathbed confession of Allan Armadale; his story concerns his murder of the man he had disinherited (also called Allan Armadale), who had subsequently married the woman he was betrothed to under false pretensions. Under Allan's instructions, the confession is left to be opened by his son once he comes of age.

Nineteen years later, the son of the murdered man, also Allan Armadale, rescues a man of his own age, Ozias Midwinter. The stranger reveals himself to Reverend Decimus Brock, a friend of Allan through his late mother, as another Allan Armadale (the son of the man who committed the murder). Ozias tells Decimus of his desperate upbringing, having run away from his mother and stepfather (Mr. Neal).

The Reverend promises not to disclose their relation to one another, and the young men become close companions. Ozias remains haunted by a fear that he will harm Allan as a result of their proximity, a fate warned of in his father's letter; this feeling intensifies when the pair spend a night on a shipwreck off the Isle of Man—as it turns out, the very ship on which the murder was committed. Also on the vessel, Allan has a mysterious dream involving three characters; Ozias believes that the events are a prophecy of the future.

The world of Chaiavis is a lawless place. As a haven for smugglers, mercenaries, and criminals from all corners of Fringe Space, the sprawling city’s law enforcement officials are consistently overwhelmed…at least those who aren’t already in the pockets of the local gangs and cartels.
Banished from her homeworld of Haphez due to a genetic defect, Kat Reilly has called Chaiavis home since childhood. Her intimate knowledge of the streets and inner workings of the city has turned her into a skilled fixer. Her clients—the desperate, the powerful, sometimes both—seek out her services when conventional channels aren’t an option.
When she’s hired by an agent from Haphez’s own embassy to track down a stolen service weapon, Kat is tempted to refuse. But the deeper she digs into the theft, the clearer it becomes that the weapon is merely a piece of a much larger, more sinister puzzle. On this job, her mission to help others becomes a battle for her own survival.
I Am Reilly is a short story set just prior to the events of Nexus: Ziva Payvan Book 2 and can be enjoyed independently.

This book is the autobiography of the author. It began, however, as a biography of the author’s mother, which allowed Vicky to write about American society in the mid-to-late twentieth century; experiences of Slavic, French, and East Indian immigrants at the United States around the turn of the twentieth century; child and spouse abuse perpetrated by women as well as men and the effects of intergenerational abuse; and murder and suicide.
The author hopes to educate people about the American poor in the twentieth century and to broaden people’s perspective on American life. Not all Americans had the benefits of understanding mainstream American culture and society as well as knowing the language of the nation and having a supportive family. Perhaps this book could help us all understand present-day immigrants as well.
Vicky Bedi is a talented musician who has been a church organist for most of her life. She is also a talented artist and designs many of her own clothes. Aside from her childhood Vicky has been influenced throughout her life by spirituality, friends, and pets. Whisper of Hope, Cry of Despair is her first book.
