Sinopsis

“Shabbat arrives as usual, dressed in silkwith her hair and make-upbeautifully arranged.”

So begins The Sabbath Bee by Wilhelmina Gottschalk, which updates the millenia-old genre of Jewish Sabbath poetry for today's world.

“Torah, say our sages, has seventy faces. As these prose poems reveal, so too does Shabbat. Here we meet Shabbat as familiar housemate, as the child whose presence transforms a family (sometimes in ways that outsiders can’t understand), as a spreading tree, as an annoying friend who insists on being celebrated, as a child throwing water balloons, as a woman, as a man, as a bee, as the ocean… Through the lens of these deft, surprising, moving prose poems, all seventy of Shabbat’s faces shine.”

They say you can’t catch a fish with a hook.

It’s 1925, a world on the cusp of change. Hitler has published Mein Kampf and Mussolini has shut down the free press in Italy.

Three friends meet on a Scottish estate for a weekend of salmon fishing and convivial conversation over brandy and cigars: Winston Churchill, future world leader, ‘Bendor’, 2nd Duke of Westminster and Coco Chanel, iconic fashion entrepreneur. The narrative develops into a visceral account interspersed with sharp and insightful humour, revealing two men whose deep friendship is divided by their profound political differences, as each of them tries to navigate an uncertain world.

And then there is Coco Chanel, also an accomplished angler and Bendor’s mistress. She enters wearing furs and exits wearing waders.

In Winston & The Duke, Rory Fellowes delivers a thought-provoking play that invites the audience to question:
Have we learned anything from history?Should we pay attention to past events rather than purge them for comfort’s sake? Can controversial friendships exist openly and provoke change in today’s political arena?

That is for the listener to decide.

Reflecting on the career of a prominent poet, this biography focuses on Canadian wordsmith Barrie Nichol — more commonly known by his pen name, bpNichol — who was a practicing lay psychoanalyst and vice president of one the largest and long-lasting North American communes for more than a decade. Recognizing his international influence as both a visual and sound poet, Nichol's literary achievements are reviewed, including The Martyrology, a renowned, seven-volume poem, four novels, two musical comedies, six children's books, hundreds of hand-drawn visual poems, and even 10 episodes of Jim Henson's hit television series Fraggle Rock. Penned by one of Nichol's numerous literary collaborators, this account reveals the close connections among the writer's various activities, particularly how the autobiographical inquiries and Freudian dream theory linked with the young poet's biographical self-awareness. The book demonstrates how the Subject's main psychoanalytic client was his own writing, following Nichol as he explored its slips, accidental puns, and unintended meanings and implications for the communal future of the human species, both in high literature and comical prime time television.

    "Quoth the Raven, 'Nevermore.'"

On a "bleak December" midnight, a weary student seeks refuge from his sorrow in ancient books, only to be interrupted by a mysterious tapping at his chamber door. What follows is a dark, psychological tug-of-war between a man paralyzed by the loss of his beloved Lenore and a "stately Raven" that perches atop a bust of Pallas. Through hypnotic rhythm and internal rhyme, Poe captures the precise moment when melancholy turns into incurable despair. The bird's singular, repetitive refrain becomes a mirror for the narrator's own self-torture, transforming a simple midnight visit into a timeless symbol of the human struggle with the finality of death.

Poe famously wrote an essay, "The Philosophy of Composition," detailing how he meticulously crafted this poem to achieve a "unity of effect." Every element, from the choice of the raven as a "bird of ill omen" to the trochaic octameter of the verses, was designed to build a crescendo of dread.

The Raven perches upon the bust of Pallas Athena (the goddess of wisdom), symbolizing the triumph of irrational grief over reason. By the poem's end, the narrator's soul is trapped within the shadow of the bird, signifying that for some types of grief, there is no escape and no "balm in Gilead."

The Raven made Poe a household name almost overnight. Its musicality makes it one of the most effective pieces for oral recitation, while its psychological depth continues to fascinate scholars and horror fans alike. It is the definitive expression of the "Dark Romantic" movement—a beautiful, terrifying look at a heart that refuses to heal.
