Sinopse

In "A History of New York," Washington Irving employs a satirical and humorous narrative style to explore the early history and whimsical character of New Amsterdam, the Dutch settlement that would eventually become New York City. Written in the guise of a fictional historian, Diedrich Knickerbocker, Irving blends historical facts with inventive anecdotes and comic exaggeration, providing a rich tapestry of colonial life. This work reflects the early 19th-century American fascination with establishing a unique national identity, utilizing the past to shape contemporary understandings of American culture and politics. Washington Irving, an eminent figure of American literature, was deeply influenced by his travels and the nascent American ethos during the post-Revolutionary period. His keen interest in the folklore and history of New York, combined with his European experiences, culminated in this remarkable work. Irving's innovative style and pioneering spirit not only cemented his place as one of America's first great writers but also inspired subsequent generations to delve into historical narrative. "A History of New York" is essential reading for anyone interested in the roots of American culture, humor, and identity. Irving'Äôs witty and engaging storytelling invites readers to experience the founding moments of one of the world'Äôs greatest cities, making this book a delightful exploration of both history and literature.

'The people want' - thus began the slogans chanted by millions of protesters in 2011 in what was dubbed the 'Arab Spring'. ?While the protests revealed a long-suppressed craving for democracy, they also laid bare a deep structural crisis. In this landmark work, Middle East analyst Gilbert Achcar examines the socio-economic roots and political dynamics of the regional upheaval. He assesses the peculiarities of the region's states and regimes, and sheds light on the movements that use Islam as a political banner. Achcar argues that the Arab Spring was but the beginning of a long-term revolutionary process - a perspective confirmed by a second wave of uprisings in 2019 - and outlines the requirements for a solution to the crisis. This new edition features a preface drawing a balance sheet of the upheaval's first decade.

Suleiman was the most famous sultan of the Ottoman empire in the sixteenth century. His reign meant an increase of interest in art, expanded regions under Muslim law, and hundreds of thousands of men employed in the army, ready to fight wars against surrounding nations. Political and law reforms took place, and in the matter of a short time span, much of the culture and society in the region had been changed.
The Ottoman Empire didn’t last, though, and after Suleiman’s death, the empire remained stagnant and went on a steady decline sometime later. In the beginning of the 20th century, there wasn’t much left of the once great empire.
In this book, you will find everything you need to know about Suleiman’s life, his mission, his victories, death, and the events that occurred after his death in the Ottoman Empire.

History placed Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762-1814) between two giants of German philosophy – Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) and Georg Hegel (1770-1831) – so it was not surprising that his light may have dimmed as the 19th century developed. It didn’t help that he also was regarded as one of the proponents of German nationalism, a legacy that spilled over into the darker times of the 20th century.
However, his singular character and his role in developing, (following Kant), transcendental idealism has resulted in a re-evaluation in recent years. His views on ethics, a practical approach towards the matter of free will, and the value he placed on culture, the intellect and the self, informed his output.
The three works in this collection, Volume 1, offer a steady insight into Fichte’s thought and personality. Many of his key works emerged in the form of lectures rather than books, and as such are eminently accessible: Fichte was certainly a popular speaker. When at the University of Jena (1794-1799) he drew large audiences for the five lectures which comprise The Vocation of the Scholar (1794). The main principles of the Enlightenment are examined here, in terms of culture, education, morality. As he writes in his Preface: ‘That the Ideal cannot be manifested in the Actual world, we know as well as they do, perhaps better. All we maintain is, that the Actual must be judged by the Ideal, and modified in accordance with it by those who feel themselves capable of such a task.’
In 1799, he was dismissed from his post at Jena following accusations of atheism, and the last two works in this collection appeared while he was at the University of Berlin. The Nature of the Scholar and its Manifestations dates from 1806 and comprises 10 lectures which develop ideas initially presented in The Vocation of the Scholar. The final work here, The Vocation of Man, appeared in book form rather than as a series of lectures and is regarded as one of his most important. In it, Fichte sets out to examine ‘the true purpose of man’.
It is divided into three sections, Doubt, Knowledge, Faith. He addresses issues of free will and cause and effect, natural existence and perceived reality; and, finally, the ‘guiding’ matter of faith and God.
