Summary

Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts was a British Victorian era general who became one of the most successful British military commanders of his time. Born in India to an Anglo-Irish family, Roberts joined the East India Company Army and served as a young officer in the Indian Mutiny during which he was awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry. He was then transferred to the British Army and fought in the Expedition to Abyssinia and the Second Anglo-Afghan War, in which his exploits earned him widespread fame. Roberts would go on to serve as the Commander-in-Chief, India before leading British Forces for a year during the Second Boer War. He also became the last Commander-in-Chief of the Forces before the post was abolished in 1904. In this excellent short biography of Roberts, Walter Jerrold tells the tale of the legendary soldier’s many exploits and victories across the British Empire.

Technocracy is a concept that has evolved over time, yet its core principles remain focused on the idea that governance should be driven by scientific knowledge and technical expertise rather than political ideologies or populist sentiments. The term "technocracy" was first introduced in the early 20th century by engineers and economists who believed that the efficient management of resources and societal development could only be achieved through the application of scientific principles. Technocrats argued that political leaders, often with little to no understanding of complex systems, were ill-equipped to make decisions that could optimize society’s functioning, particularly in times of rapid industrialization and technological advancement.
The origins of technocracy can be traced back to the industrial revolution, when technological innovations began reshaping economies and societies. However, the movement gained significant traction in the early 1930s during the Great Depression, a period of economic turmoil that called into question traditional governance models. During this time, scholars like Howard Scott and engineers from the Technocratic Movement in the United States called for the establishment of a technocratic society where engineers, scientists, and other experts would manage the economy based on data-driven decision-making rather than political influence. They believed that such a system would eliminate inefficiencies, social inequalities, and the corruption they associated with political governance.

    Finding Voice For Authentic...

Terry takes us on a whirlwind tour of what it means to give voice to our own authenticity. It requires deep listening and fertile silences. She encourages us to speak “Mother Tongue” — speaking from the belly rather than the mind.
She laments that in Western culture “the language of economics has power, the language of the law has power, the language of science has power. But an intelligence of the heart, an emotional intelligence, or a poetic sensibility, or even a sensibility that comes from the side, from a different angle, from a different point of view, asks us to form a different kind of shape of conversation.”
In this delightfully warm and thoughtful program you’ll be dazzled by the mystery of Terry’s dying mother’s request for her to read her journals, but not until after her death. Terry found 3 shelves of journals only to discover all of them were blank. Puzzle along with Terry as she takes us from the Red Rock Wildlands of Utah to the Plains of Kenya in a far-reaching dialogue about finding one’s authentic voice. (hosted by Justine Willis Toms)
