Summary

In "Acts of Supremacy," Walter Francis Fitzpatrick III delivers a searing exposé of America's military justice system through the lens of his own harrowing experience. As a decorated Naval officer whose career was derailed by what he describes as a rigged court-martial, Fitzpatrick meticulously documents how military tribunals operate outside constitutional boundaries, creating a shadow justice system where commanders wield extraordinary power over the accused.

Fitzpatrick unravels the historical roots of military discipline from Roman and British traditions to modern practice, revealing how the Uniform Code of Military Justice allows for prosecutorial overreach, command influence, and denial of due process rights that would be unthinkable in civilian courts. With painstaking detail, he reconstructs his own case alongside the infamous court-martial of USS Indianapolis Captain Charles McVay, demonstrating disturbing parallels of command vindictiveness and scapegoating spanning decades.

This unflinching account exposes how military justice can become a weapon wielded by commanders against subordinates, raising urgent questions about constitutional protections for those who swear to defend those very rights. Fitzpatrick's narrative combines personal memoir, legal analysis, and historical research to challenge readers to consider reform of a system that impacts thousands of service members.

A crucial read for military personnel, legal professionals, and anyone concerned with justice and accountability in American institutions. If you enjoyed "Military Justice is to Justice as Military Music is to Music," "Court-Martial: How Military Justice Has Shaped America," and "Dereliction of Duty," you'll love "Acts of Supremacy."

    ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK
"The Giver" by Lois Lowry tells the story of Jonas, a young boy living in a seemingly perfect society that values sameness and control. The community has eliminated pain and suffering, but also emotions and individuality by removing memories of the past. As Jonas is chosen to be the next Receiver of Memory, he begins to understand that this utopia has come at a great cost. Through the memories that he receives from the current Receiver, known as The Giver, Jonas experiences the full spectrum of human emotions, both good and bad, which his community has suppressed. He learns of love, joy, war, and loss. This knowledge causes Jonas to question the morality of his society, and he ultimately decides that he must leave in search of a better way of life. The book explores the themes of memory, freedom, individuality, and the importance of emotions in human experience.

Are you above average? Is your child an A student? Is your employee an introvert or an extrovert? Every day we are measured against the yardstick of averages, judged according to how closely we come to it or how far we deviate from it.
The assumption that metrics comparing us to an average—like GPAs, personality test results, and performance review ratings—reveal something meaningful about our potential is so ingrained in our consciousness that we don’t even question it. That assumption, says Harvard’s Todd Rose, is spectacularly—and scientifically—wrong.
In The End of Average, Rose, a rising star in the new field of the science of the individual shows that no one is average. Not you. Not your kids. Not your employees. This isn’t hollow sloganeering—it’s a mathematical fact with enormous practical consequences. But while we know people learn and develop in distinctive ways, these unique patterns of behaviors are lost in our schools and businesses which have been designed around the mythical “average person.” This average-size-fits-all model ignores our differences and fails at recognizing talent. It’s time to change it.
Weaving science, history, and his personal experiences as a high school dropout, Rose offers a powerful alternative to understanding individuals through averages: the three principles of individuality. The jaggedness principle (talent is always jagged), the context principle (traits are a myth), and the pathways principle (we all walk the road less traveled) help us understand our true uniqueness—and that of others—and how to take full advantage of individuality to gain an edge in life.
Read this powerful manifesto in the ranks of Drive, Quiet, and Mindset—and you won’t see averages or talent in the same way again.
