Summary

In "The Greatest Works of W.E.B. Du Bois," readers are immersed in a profound exploration of race, identity, and social justice as articulated by one of the foremost intellectuals of the 20th century. This anthology showcases Du Bois's eloquent prose and masterful command of sociological thought, weaving together essays, critiques, and notable excerpts from his seminal works. As Du Bois deftly navigates the complexities of the African American experience, he invokes a distinctive blend of literary expressiveness and empirical analysis, reflecting the zeitgeist of the Harlem Renaissance and the broader American socio-political landscape of his time. W.E.B. Du Bois (1868'Äì1963) was a pioneering sociologist, historian, and civil rights activist, whose multifaceted career was shaped by his experiences as an African American in a racially stratified society. His prestigious academic background, including a Ph.D. from Harvard, alongside his activism and founding role in the NAACP, imbued his writing with an urgent authenticity and intellectual rigor that resonate across generations. Du Bois's works often juxtapose personal reflections with scholarly analysis, making them both accessible and profoundly impactful. This anthology is essential for anyone seeking to understand the foundations of modern civil rights discourse and the rich history of African American literature. It invites readers to engage deeply with Du Bois's insights, which remain remarkably relevant in confronting contemporary issues of race and inequality. Whether you are a student, scholar, or casual reader, this compilation offers an opportunity to connect with an enduring voice that continues to inspire and provoke thought.

"As a major fan and promoter of Julian of Norwich, whom I call 'my favorite mystic', it is genuinely exciting to find such a faithful but freeing translation of Julian's long-lost Showings. Now they are no longer lost—for anyone!"—Fr. Richard Rohr, O.F.M., Center for Action and Contemplation
In this contemporary translation of one of the most beloved and influential mystical texts of all time, Julian of Norwich: The Showings brings the message and spirituality of this 14th-century mystic to 21st-century readers. Revelations of Divine Love, the first book published in English attributed to a woman, is also included.
Julian of Norwich, a contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer, was an English anchoress in East Anglia. At the age of 30, suffering from a severe illness and believing she was on her deathbed, Julian had a series of intense visions of Jesus, which she recorded and then expanded on later in her life. In her visions, God was not angry and wrathful. Instead, the three properties of God were presented as life, love, and light, and all of His creation was good, including his servant, man. In Julian's version, man is not to blame for his sin; sin is something that he must experience and overcome in his spiritual journey with God.
Her message for today's readers is simply this:
She reveals the feminine face of the Divine and reminds us to see God there. All our failings are an opportunity to learn and grow; they should be honored, but not dwelled upon.God's love has nothing to do with love and retribution and everything to do with love and compassion. In spite of all appearances, all is well. This book contains some of the most profound spiritual writing ever written and remains a perennial favorite among Christians.
This book was previously published as The Showings of Julian of Norwich. This new edition includes a foreword by Richard Rohr, author of Falling Upwards.

Are contemporary soldiers exploited by the state and society that they defend? More specifically, have America's professional service members disproportionately carried the moral weight of America's war-fighting decisions since the inception of an all-volunteer force? In this volume, Michael J. Robillard and Bradley J. Strawser examine the question of whether and how American soldiers have been exploited in this way.

Robillard and Strawser offer an original theory of "moral exploitation"—the notion that persons or groups can be wrongfully exploited by being made to shoulder an excessive amount of moral weight. They make the case that this exploitation accurately describes the relationship between the United States and the members of its military, and offer an in-depth analysis of some of the exploitative and misleading elements of present-day military recruitment, the moral burdens soldiers often bear, and the stifling effect that a "Thank You for Your Service" and "I support the troops" culture has had on serious public engagement about America's ongoing wars. Robillard and Strawser offer a critique of the pernicious divide between military members and the civilians who direct them. They conclude by arguing for several normative and prudential prescriptions to help close this ever-widening fissure between the US and its military, and within the US itself.

How to Have Willpower brings together two profound ancient meditations on how to overcome pressures that encourage us to act against our own best interests—Plutarch's essay On Dysopia or How to Resist Pressure and Prudentius's poetic allegory Psychomachia or How to Slay Your Demons. Challenging the idea that humans are helpless victims of vice, these works—introduced and presented in vivid, accessible new prose translations by Michael Fontaine—emphasize the power of personal choice and the possibility of personal growth, as they offer insights and practical advice about resisting temptation.

In the spirit of the best ancient self-help writing, Plutarch, a pagan Greek philosopher and historian, offers a set of practical recommendations and steps we can take to resist pressure and to stop saying "yes" against our better judgment. And in a delightfully different work, Prudentius, a Latin Christian poet, dramatizes the necessity to actively fight temptation through the story of an epic battle within the human soul between fierce warrior women representing our virtues and vices.

Plutarch and Prudentius insist that we allow pressure or temptations to get the best of us. But they also agree that we can do something about it. And their wisdom can help.
