Christians begin their first steps in Christ at the moment of conversion. From that moment on, they have access to freedoms that weren't possible prior. But every disciple must understand those freedoms and learn how to walk in them, which requires practice.

In First Freedoms, Jennifer Barnett unpacks many "first freedoms" that Christians own but often don't fully integrate into their relationship with God. First freedoms are fundamental tools in prayer that encourage a close, sincere, and ongoing relationship with God. Jennifer explains how to foster freedoms such as cultivating a powerful prayer life, abiding fully in God's presence, healing emotional scars, battling the schemes of the enemy, and many others.

The goal? Drawing near to God through prayer to enable you to guard your heart with all diligence and grow in intimacy with him. Such wonderful freedoms were never available before putting your faith in Christ. But in Christ you can experience them. Cultivate a wholehearted prayer life and experience the joy and peace that come from walking freely in a meaningful relationship with God. Take your next steps toward God with First Freedoms.

The Reformation did not happen instantaneously; it was something God patiently arranged over a number of years. As you read this book, you will learn how the Lord used some people to plant the seeds of church reform long before October 31, 1517, when Martin Luther published his ninety-five theses. Luther's story is well-known; we trust you will find it interesting and instructive to read about him and about forty others (John Knox, Peter Martyr Vermigli, Zacharias Ursinus, Willem Teellinck, etc.) who contributed to the Reformation - some well known and others not so - most of whom are Reformation heroes. To provide a more full picture of the many sided Reformation, chapters are also included on the Anabaptist and Counter Reformation movements. The book concludes with a brief summary of the influence of the Reformation in different areas of life.

    The Bruised Reed and Smoking...

Bruising is needed so that reeds may know they are reeds, not oaks. Reeds need to be bruised because of the pride in our nature, the removal of which lets us live by mercy and faith. It is a difficult thing to bring a dull heart to cry for mercy. Our hearts, like malefactors, until they are beaten from all sides, never naturally cry for mercy from the Judge. But this bruising makes us set a high price upon Christ. It makes us more thankful and more fruitful in our lives.Whatever claim sin has on a man, bruising or breaking is the end of it. This spark of hope, being opposed by doubts and fears arising from the corruption of sin, makes him as smoking flax. Thus, both these together, a bruised reed and smoking flax, make up the state of a poor, distressed man. Our Savior terms such a one as poor in spirit.Christ will not break the bruised reed or quench the smoking flax. Though physicians put their patients through much pain, they will not destroy their patients' bodies but will do their best to heal them. Surgeons will cut, but not dismember. A mother will not cast away a sick or disobedient child. Shall we think there is more mercy in ourselves than in God, who plants the affection of mercy in us? To further declare Christ’s mercy to all bruised reeds, consider the comforting relationship He has taken upon Himself of husband, shepherd, and brother, which He will discharge to the utmost. It cannot but cheer the heart of the church to consider, despite all the infirmities and miseries she is subject to, that she has a Bridegroom with a kind disposition. He knows how to give the honor of kindness to the weaker vessel and will be so far from rejecting her because she is weak that He will pity her all the more. He is kind at all times and will speak to her heart, especially when in the wilderness.
