Ethnomusicology is the study of music within its cultural and social contexts. Historically, ethnomusicology emerged as a formal discipline in the early twentieth century, evolving from earlier efforts to document and categorize world music traditions. Scholars such as Jaap Kunst, Alan Lomax, and Bruno Nettl contributed significantly to the development of the field, advocating for the study of music in its broader cultural and historical context.
