What does it really mean to become the man you respect?
For most of us, the answer isn't found in a single moment. It is discovered over a lifetime.
In Becoming the Man You Respect, Joe Negron shares the deeply personal stories that shaped his life, from growing up in New York City and learning from his grandfather, to building a career in corporate America, flying airplanes, sailing oceans, serving others, raising a family, losing his wife, and ultimately discovering that life's greatest lessons often arrive through change, loss, and unexpected conversations.
This is not a book written from the viewpoint of someone who has all the answers. It is the honest reflection of a man looking back on decades of success and failure, joy and heartbreak, leadership and service, asking one simple question:
What has life been trying to teach me?
Through unforgettable stories of family, aviation, friendship, volunteer service, grief, resilience, and hope, Negron explores how integrity is formed, how purpose evolves, and how character is revealed ... not during life's easiest moments, but during its most difficult ones.
Along the way, readers will meet remarkable people whose lives quietly changed his own: a grandfather who unknowingly inspired a lifelong passion for family history, a father entering a new season of life, students, mentors, Holocaust survivor Ernie Wallner, grandchildren whose laughter became healing, and countless others whose ordinary lives carried extraordinary lessons.
Although written from the perspective of a husband, father, pilot, sailor, businessman, volunteer, and friend, the lessons found here reach far beyond one man's experience. They speak to anyone who has loved deeply, suffered loss, questioned their purpose, or wondered how to make the years ahead more meaningful than those already lived.
This is a book about becoming. Becoming more patient. More courageous. More grateful. More intentional. And ultimately...
    Becoming the man you respect.

We all want to be happy and lead a fulfilling life. I wrote this book because I believe self-awareness is essential to accomplish all we hope for in our lifetime. You can cultivate it when you realize its power. We all have it, One of the biggest challenges I faced since the day I was born is what does it mean to be an Asian American living in America, especially at a time when there were so few. My race forced me be to become more self-aware of who I am, and, in this journey, I became more rooted in my humanity and developed my spiritual dimension that we all have. My book opens up with this poem and quote:
Are you greater than the sun
    that shines on everyone:
Black, Brown, Red, Yellow, and White,
    the sun does not discriminate.
“Dare to be as great as the sun. Dare to shine on everyone.”
I wrote this poem in 1978 in a personal journal. I did not realize it would change my life and put me on a path that required self-awareness, humility, courage and extraordinary patience and perseverance.
I share stories, poems, ask thought-provoking questions about biases to invite you to think about this issue that impact your life at work and in the community. All humans have unconscious biases. Prejudices and biases are just one of many life's challenges. You cannot get through life without difficulties and adversities. The bigger the problems, the bigger the growth. An essential key to finding your right path and leading a fulfilling life is self-awareness. We all have this ability. When we become conscious of this and apply it to every part of our life we can overcome fears, make better decisions especially those that are life changing, become more focused and in some cases go through dramatic changes that will bring you more love, joy and meaning to your life.
