Summary

Explore the early evolution of a modernist icon through this collection of short fiction that experiments with stream of consciousness and impressionistic imagery. The stories break away from conventional narrative, focusing instead on the fluid nature of time, color, and the inner workings of the mind. Pieces like "The Mark on the Wall" demonstrate a fascination with the subjective experience of reality, turning mundane moments into profound psychological journeys. This anthology serves as a vital laboratory where the techniques that would define the author's later masterpieces were first forged.
Available since: 01/29/2026.

Lanoe Falconer is the pseudonym of the English writer, Marie Elizabeth Hawker (1848 - 1908). Her works, though few, were well received. She lived most of her life in the Hampshire Valley, the source of these verbal sketches. Never married, her health was precarious, preventing her from writing more, though she wished to. She died of tuberculosis, as did her brother. (Summary by David Wales)

    About this book:
Zimmermann, the author's fictional friend and (sympathetic) terror of his neighbourhood, never tires of trying the nerves of his fellow citizens and his unfortunate friend with ever new and always crazy ideas and deeds. Whether as a driving licence applicant, inventor, lion tamer or mere tourist, he amazes or frightens his fellow citizens and - hopefully - leaves the reader smiling and satisfied.
In this volume, you will find 28 amusing and extremely exciting stories about the interesting, heavy-soldering and 'good-for-nothing' Zimmermann.

G K Chesterton (29 May 1874 – 14 June 1936) was a poet, novelist, playwright, literary commentator, editor, biographer, journalist, orator and theologian. He was often dubbed as the “prince of paradox” for his light whimsical style that often addressed serious issues such as politics and religion. The latter was as a member and defender of the Christian faith and the former was shaped by a distrust of concentrated wealth and power. He advocated Distributionism and said that every man should be allowed to own "three acres and a cow." These political views have spread round the world, crediting Chesterton as the father of the “small is beautiful” movement. It is also said to have influenced Gandhi in seeking a genuine nationalism for India rather than imitating the British state.
Chesterton was remarkably prolific but perhaps his most famous creation is Father Brown. Within this character Chesterton’s clever writing and profound ideas reveal truths, often with humour as the detective priest pursues the answers to his cases.
