Publicada en 1892, “La bodega" es una novela naturalista del escritor español Vicente Blasco Ibáñez en la que es evidente la influencia de Zola. Pertenece al grupo de las llamadas novelas sociales en las que el escritor refleja su preocupación por los problemas del país. En concreto, “La bodega” se sitúa en Jerez de la Frontera, ciudad del vino y de ricos terratenientes, y presenta al lector una fuerte crítica social a los señoritos que explotaban a los jornaleros, a la religión que ayudaba a mantener ese estatus, al propio vino que embrutece y nubla la conciencia del pueblo y al absurdo reparto de las tierras andaluzas.

“La bodega” centra la historia en Fernando Salvatierra, Fermín Montenegro, su padre, su hermana y su novio Rafael y las relaciones que mantienen con los amos y señores, los poderosos Dupont. A través de la familia protagonista, la novela describe con maestría la vida miserable de los jornaleros y gañanes de Jerez, siempre encorvados sobre la vid de sol a sol, por dos míseros reales de jornal, y tres raciones de pan al día sin ninguna esperanza de mejorar su suerte. Una esclavitud azuzada por el hambre que les agota toda su fuerza y vigor, y que debido a la mala alimentación a los treinta o treinta y cinco años parece que tuvieran cincuenta, no siendo contratados entonces, y prefiriendo los dueños de las viñas a los muchachos y muchachas muy jóvenes para seguir explotando lo único que tienen: su salud y juventud.
