Summary

Benjamin Drew's "North-Side View of Slavery: The Refugee, or the Narratives of Fugitive Slaves in Canada" (1856) is a collection of his interviews with former slaves living in Canada who had escaped from the United States, and an invaluable example of the transnational abolitionist movement's political agenda. These edited oral accounts show how these runaways turned into African Canadians and reconfigured new meanings of Blackness in Canada, set out the foundations of a Black Canadian sense of attachment, and eventually helped to reshape North America by contributing to the birth of the Canadian nation-state.

Throughout history, myths have played a crucial role in shaping cultures, beliefs, and societal values. Among these myths, female figures hold a particularly powerful and diverse presence, ranging from benevolent creators to fearsome destroyers, wise protectors to cunning tricksters. Mythical women embody complex archetypes that reflect both admiration and fear, highlighting their influence across different civilizations. Whether as goddesses, warriors, enchantresses, or tragic heroines, these figures have left an indelible mark on mythology and continue to shape modern perspectives on femininity and power.

One of the most striking aspects of mythical women is their duality. Many goddesses and legendary figures are revered for their nurturing qualities while also possessing a fierce and destructive side. In Greek mythology, Demeter represents the life-giving force of agriculture, yet her grief over her daughter Persephone’s abduction brings about the harshness of winter. Similarly, in Hindu mythology, Kali embodies both maternal protection and unrelenting destruction. This dual nature reflects society’s evolving understanding of women—not as one-dimensional figures but as complex individuals capable of immense strength and resilience.

Symbolism plays a key role in how these figures are perceived. Mythical women are often linked to natural forces, such as the moon, water, and fertility, reinforcing their connection to life and renewal. At the same time, they can embody chaos and transformation, disrupting the status quo to bring about necessary change. Figures like Medusa, once a beautiful priestess turned into a monster, and Lilith, a rebellious first woman in Jewish folklore, demonstrate how female power can be both feared and demonized. These stories reveal underlying cultural anxieties about female independence and strength, themes that persist in literature and media today.

    Excerpt:

There has been a prevailing tendency in science to take a wholly materialistic view of life and the universe. This has perhaps been a natural reaction against the superstitions of past ages which have often masqueraded as religious truth. Happily this extreme reaction is now less apparent than it was, and there now seems to be among scientists a more open-minded approach to life and its phenomena. Parapsychological phenomena, which only a decade ago were not considered to be worthy of serious attention, are now being studied with considerable interest.

    ...

The aim of this essay is to review the evidence and examine the arguments for rebirth in an attempt to make a modest contribution to our understanding of the doctrine. We shall see first that the doctrine is very ancient and very widespread. We shall see that it reflects the natural order which from our observations we know to be cyclical. We shall have a brief look at the evidence from the claimed memories of former lives. We shall try to determine the nature of that which is reborn. And finally we shall examine one of the ways by which the process of rebirth may take place. In this way I hope to make our survey comprehensive so that our evaluation can be truly scientific.

Richard I ruled as King of England from 1189 to 1199. He also governed as Duke of Normandy, Aquitaine, and Gascony, Lord of Cyprus, and Count of Poitiers, Anjou, Maine, and Nantes, and also being ruler of Brittany at different periods. He was the 3rd of 5 sons of King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine, and he appeared not likely to prosper his dad as king, but all of his brothers had passed away before him, other than the youngest, John.Just because of his track record as a prominent army leader and fighter, Richard is called Richard Cur de Lion (Norman French: Le quor de lion) or Richard the Lionheart. Richard Oc-e-Non (Occitan for Yes and No) was a label given to him by troubadour Bertran de Born, probably simply because of his terseness.Richard had taken management of his own army by the age of 16, putting down disobediences in Poitou against his dad.Richard was a key Christian leader throughout the Third Crusade, commanding the project after Philip II of France's departure and winning substantial successes over Saladin, his Muslim equivalent, while signing a peace treaty and ending the fight without retaking Jerusalem. In this book, we will learn more about his life and his motivations.
