Summary

Mr. Punch Afloat: The Humours of Boating and Sailing is a whimsical exploration of maritime life, infused with the characteristic humor and satire of its time. This anthology features a delightful array of illustrations, stories, and poems that capture the eccentricities and joys of boating and sailing in the late 19th century. Through sharp wit and engaging narrative style, the contributors illustrate the often absurd experiences of sailors, highlighting the interplay between human folly and the majestic, yet unpredictable nature of the sea. The book serves not only as a source of entertainment but also as a cultural document that reflects the societal attitudes towards leisure and exploration during the Victorian era. The collection, curated by various authors, draws upon the collective spirit of the Punch periodical, known for its comedic take on contemporary issues. Contributors were often satirists and caricaturists, deeply entrenched in the artistic movements of their time. Their backgrounds and experiences in the maritime spheres enriched their depictions of life on the water, allowing for a blend of humor and critique that resonates with both coastal enthusiasts and literary aficionados. This charming anthology is highly recommended for readers who appreciate a blend of humor, history, and nautical themes. Whether you're a sailor, a landlubber yearning for adventures at sea, or simply someone who enjoys sharp wit and illustrations that bring the quirks of life afloat to light, Mr. Punch Afloat promises to entertain, enlighten, and evoke laughter.

A wild bull on the field, a fly ball caught by a train conductor, a pitcher taking the mound barefoot—Minor League Baseball has been played across the country in cities large and small for more than a century, and there are thousands of entertaining and improbable stories to tell from it.
Join professional baseball broadcaster Tim Hagerty for a journey through the zaniest Minor League stories in Tales from the Dugout. Given its long history, it is no surprise that the game has encountered some bizarre things over the years. This humorous and outlandish collection of stories is sourced from newspaper archives and the Baseball Hall of Fame Library in Cooperstown, New York, and includes a foreword by former MLB All-Star Billy Butler. Whether you're a baseball fanatic or just a fan of sports history, this book captures the spirit of the game.
This compendium of minor league shenanigans includes:HOLE IN ONE: In 1942, a Milwaukee Brewers batter hit a low line drive that bounced down the right field line. He rounded the bases while confused Louisville Colonels fielders searched for the ball. They eventually found it inside a gopher hole.MONKEYING AROUND: A chimp's escape turned a Southern Association game into pandemonium on July 17, 1909. "Henry the Chimpanzee," the New Orleans Pelicans' official mascot, busted from his cage and chased players around the field. The chimp then went after fans, who ran from him screaming. The game was delayed a few minutes while Henry was restrained.HEADLESS CRUSHER: A police department in Ohio got a call about a missing head. The Lake Erie Crushers' mascot's head was stolen in 2011, forcing the mascot to miss a few home games. After learning through media reports that police were investigating, the thief returned the head by inconspicuously placing it under the ballpark's tarp.

I'm Serafina Lopez, and I'm an astrologer. No, not the airy-fairy type who wears long flowy skirts and enormous hoop earrings—you know, unless I want to. I'm an uber-serious businesswoman. My popular lifestyle app, "Live for you Star Sign," is getting so big, I've just been asked to be a guest on New York's most-watched morning show. This TV segment is going to launch my career into the stratosphere.

Imagine my surprise when I show up on set to find out that I'm not the only guest. They've also invited astrophysicist Ben Williams from NASA. (I'm not sure if you know this, but astrologers and rocket scientists aren't exactly sympatico.) It's 100% hate at first sight (with maybe a tiny dose of lust thrown in.) Too bad he's a total jerk who slings insults at my career. Our explosive chemistry sets records for the network's viewing audience, which means we're asked to host a weekly segment . . . together.

Unable to turn down the career opportunity of a lifetime, I agree to work with Dr. Grumpy McGorgeous Nerd Pants. Just when I think it can't get any worse, the network sends us to Florida for a conference. When we arrive, we find out we'll be stuck sharing the same hotel room. And that's when it happens. Somewhere in the haze of hating him, I wind up wanting him. But there's no way I can fall for someone who doesn't respect my beliefs.

La femme. Le mari. L'enfant. Le chat. Le petit dejeuner. Le journal. L'auteur. La festival du filme. La critique. L'agent. Le mort. La naissance.
    A novel starring Jean-Luc Godard.
It's Edinburgh Film Festival 2020 and critic Victor Eaves meets filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard in a novel blending mad vulgarity with slingshot satire. French Toast is a family farce and cinematic adventure starring a giant of the silver screen.
"This is the story of my encounter with the venerable French-Swiss film director Jean-Luc Godard. In 2020, when he was 90 years old, Godard was invited to Edinburgh to speak at the Film Festival and I was chosen to meet him, as I was the only journalist in the city who both spoke French and had seen any of his films."
    VICTOR EAVES
"Burnett's latest novel is both a scabrous satire and a rollicking caper, and comes stuffed with big ideas, memorable set pieces, clever in-jokes and caustic asides. Buried within the mayhem lurk shrewd insights into artistic judgment."
    THE HERALD
"Peter Burnett is not in the business of fuelling hubris. He is concerned with questions about meaning, value and the nature of authenticity."
