Summary

"Memorials of Old Derbyshire" is a compelling anthology that brings together the rich historical and cultural tapestry of Derbyshire through a collection of essays, anecdotes, and observations from various authors. Renowned for its intricate depictions of local landscapes and communities, the work employs a blend of descriptive prose and personal narrative that captures the essence of Derbyshire'Äôs storied past. Written during the 19th century, a period marked by a burgeoning interest in local history and folklore, this volume provides readers with a vivid insight into both rural and urban life, emphasizing the interplay between nature and human endeavor in shaping the region's identity. The collaborative effort features contributions from writers deeply rooted in British literary traditions, each inspired by Derbyshire's diverse heritage. Influenced by the Romantic movement's celebration of nature and the Victorian era's historicism, these authors sought to document the cultural legacy of their homeland. Their work reflects a collective nostalgia for a time when community narratives were vital to personal and social identity, resonating with a time of immense social change. This anthology is highly recommended for readers interested in local history, cultural studies, or the evolution of British literature. With its rich insights and evocative language, "Memorials of Old Derbyshire" serves not only as a historical document but also as a poetic homage to a region that continues to inspire those who explore its landscapes.

"Human nature is the expression of all beings; a human being is the miniature of the universe."
The author devoted more than 20 years to this book, proving a philosophical principle and making several critical comments on different theories regarding social problems we are now facing: what is the natural foundation of human subsistence or human phenomena? Why is the progression of civilization and its social development inevitably moving toward an endangering destination? And why are the mental attributes and knowledge system ultimately proved unhelpful or even appear negative? In sum, it rings the alarm through an insightful mode of ultimate investigation for the self-important humanity, and it also foresees the coming of the cloud for the described bright future.
Compared with Newton's theory of gravity, Einstein's theory of relativity applies to a more extensive range of space; similarly, Dongyue's theory of weakening compensation applies to a more comprehensive range of human cognition compared with Darwin's theory of biological evolution. In other words, Einstein's theory of relativity is a massive expansion of Newton's theory of gravitation, and Dongyue's theory of weakening compensation is also a tremendous expansion of Darwin's theory of biological evolution. This philosophical monograph is in a demonstrative method with a unique style of language that is quite different from other works in this field, which makes the reading a challenge to many.

Part catharsis, part diagnosis, this divinely wry collection from New Yorker and McSweeney's satirist Eli Grober will strike a chord with those who are dismayed by the chaos of our times. None of it will help—but a few good laughs won't hurt. Probably.

There's a lot going on, all the time. It may feel overwhelming. Don't worry. It will end. This Won't Help is here for you in the meantime—with 100 short, sharp, satirical essays that skewer a world raging with inaction, while maximizing the profits of self-destruction. As if that would help!

Eli Grober's biting, Swiftian prose spares no one—not the megalomaniacal billionaire fleeing Earth for a better life on unlivable Mars, not an extremely online family living completely off-grid, not even a fossil-fuel lobbyist insisting we all stop using straws. (Eli does spare a kind thought for the supremely intelligent listeners with the good sense to buy this book.) Maybe, just maybe, descending through the inferno of our environmental, economic, and political landscape will help us find real solutions to the hypocrisy and dysfunction that surrounds us. But probably not.

The Catholic Church has always had regard for the spiritual and pastoral welfare of those in the military and for centuries priests have ministered to armed forces personnel in war and in peace.

Chaplains have served and continue to serve all branches of the British armed forces. The size and organization of the military and the nature of warfare has been transformed, but the chaplain’s vocation remains unchanged. Defend Us In Battle traces the growth and development of Catholic chaplaincy to British armed forces from the seventeenth to the twenty-first century.

Taking as its starting point the emergence of a recognized system of military chaplaincy established by the Society of Jesus in Reformation Europe, this wide-ranging survey considers the ministry of chaplains through succeeding centuries. It relates the struggles that Catholic soldiers and sailors endured with British officialdom before being granted their own chaplains.

Defend Us In Battle describes the ministry of priests who over the centuries and across the world have voluntarily provided Catholic service personnel with the solace of religion far away from home and frequently in danger. There emerges a powerful narrative of priestly service not always known or recognized by those outside the military.

Lebanon is often described as “the most successful failed state of the 21st century”. This irony perfectly describes the reality of the country, which harbors vital forces and remarkable economic and cultural potential, but which suffers from extreme and inextricable violence.
This book, which reads like a thriller, traces this turbulent history since the 19th century: that of a country condemned to constant struggle, constantly buffeted by external interventions, from the Ottomans to the Iranians, via the Syrians, the Israelis, the British and the Americans, not forgetting France, which continues to play a pre-eminent role.
Although Lebanon, the gateway to the Middle East and hostage to international rivalries, has managed, despite everything, to survive, and, like Sisyphus, to heal its internal dissensions in order to constantly climb back up the slope, it has nevertheless been hit in recent years by a succession of unprecedented crises, with a financial and economic collapse that has brought the country to its knees, This has been compounded by a huge influx of Syrian migrants fleeing the war in their homeland, equivalent to half the Lebanese population, and topped off by a particularly destructive confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah, which has ravaged whole swathes of Lebanon.
What are the possible solutions for Lebanon's future? What scenarios are on the horizon? These are the answers that this book also seeks to provide.
