"A Letter to a Hindu" (also known as "A Letter to a Hindoo") was a letter written by Leo Tolstoy to Tarak Nath Das on 14 December 1908. The letter was written in response to two letters sent by Das, seeking support from the Russian author and thinker for India's independence from colonial rule.
In "A Letter to a Hindu", Tolstoy argued that only through the principle of love could the Indian people gain independence from colonial rule. Tolstoy saw the law of love espoused in all the world's religions, and he argued that the individual, nonviolent application of the law of love in the form of protests, strikes and other forms of peaceful resistance were the only alternative to violent revolution. These ideas ultimately proved to be successful in 1947 in the culmination of the Indian independence movement.

The classic short story collection of Southern life by the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Optimist’s Daughter.

These eight stories reveal the singular imaginative power of one of America's most admired writers. Set in the region of the Old Natchez Trace along the lower Mississippi, the stories dip in and out of history and range from virgin wilderness to a bar in New Orleans.

In “First Love,” set in 1807, a deaf and orphaned boot-boy has a remarkable encounter with a man accused of treason, Aaron Burr. “Asphodel” ingeniously recreates a classic legend in the Old South. And the title story captures a moment in time for a pregnant woman and her young husband who has stayed out all night. In each story, Miss Welty sustains the high level of performance that, throughout her distinguished career, has won her numerous literary awards.

"Miss Welty runs a photofinish with the finest prose artists of her time." —Time

A debut short story collection that explores the vulnerability, grit, and complex nature of our humanity from a new, vital queer voice.
A yacht races to outrun a tsunami. A young man jailed on a drug charge forms a relationship with his cellmate that is by turns tender and brutal. A family buys a rural slaughterhouse, and tensions quickly escalate between them and their religious neighbors. A teen raised by his eccentric gay father, a Turkish immigrant, finds his life fractured by violence. A fictionalized Coretta Scott King, surveilled and harassed by the FBI, considers the costs of her life with her husband.
Here Is What You Do is a bravura, far-ranging collection, its stories linked by sorrow and latent hope; each one drills toward his characters' darkest emotional centers. In muscularly robust prose, with an unfailing eye for human drives and frailties, Chris Dennis captures the raw need, desire, cruelty of characters trying to connect with, and consume, each other.
