Sinopsis

The Metropolis Upton Sinclair - These are Unique Content for this Book EditionIn this 1907 novel about the extravagant life of New York Citys high society, the author of The Jungle, presents a richly detailed portrait of the wealthy elite of The Metropolis.Allan Montague, a lawyer of thirty, moves to New York City from Mississippi, along with his mother and cousin Alice, to join his younger brother Oliver, who had taken up residence there several years before. The newcomers soon discover that Oliver has become a highly networked member of a fast-paced social circuit comprising some of the most powerful members of the business class. Oliver wastes no time in introducing Allan and Alice into this exclusive group in the hope that they will all prosper through their connections.Sinclair devotes much of the novel to depictions of the profligate and jaded party life of the very rich, who spend vast sums of money on entertainment and new toys to relieve their boredom. Expensive cars (still a novelty at this time), lavishly furnished limousines and private trains, sumptuous dinners attended by liveried servants, tailor-made clothing costing thousands of dollars are described with meticulous attention to the enormous cost of it all. Sinclair also spares no detail in describing the rampant alcoholism, marital affairs, malicious gossip, backstabbing, and shallow values of this set.Deals with New York as unsparingly as "The Jungle" dealt with Chicago. To expose the vice and extravagance of the New York rich has been Mr. Sinclair's purpose in writing this story. Two brothers, one the antithesis of the other, are the mouthpieces which Mr. Sinclair uses respectively to shout forth the demagogue's selfish creed and to denounce it

Eccentricity has always held a peculiar charm, especially when it intertwines with fame. The world has an undeniable fascination with individuals who deviate from societal norms, and celebrities—already basking in the spotlight—amplify that intrigue when their beliefs and behaviors stray into the unconventional. These outliers captivate audiences not merely for their talents but for the mystique surrounding their lives and choices. From deeply spiritual practices to alien encounters, and from promoting conspiracy theories to endorsing esoteric health trends, eccentric icons represent a kaleidoscope of human curiosity and creativity.
The appeal of celebrity eccentricity lies in its ability to humanize those we often place on pedestals. At their core, their quirks reveal a vulnerability, a need to search for meaning beyond the superficial trappings of fame. This quest for deeper truths resonates with audiences, as it mirrors our own journeys to make sense of the unknown. When a globally recognized musician advocates for meditation or a Hollywood star discusses their belief in extraterrestrial life, it bridges the gap between their extraordinary existence and the ordinary lives of their fans. These moments of relatability foster a sense of connection that fuels fascination.

Father Baba received a few confessions from people suffering from AIDS and confined in an isolation centre, while awaiting their imminent death. From the nurse who carelessly inoculated the poison into the flesh of thousands of her patients, to the officer of the Congolese army who knew he was HIV positive but purposely had sex with thousands of young people to transmit them the virus as a revenge, and the western doctor who voluntarily enrolled as a humanitarian doctor in Africa to deliberately spread the virus among young African people – girls and boys, after he discovered he was HIV positive, Father Baba had heard all sorts of confessions from men and women who had decided to avenge themselves for having been contaminated with the HIV. Bound to keep secret any confession, he had never betrayed his commitment and observed silently the stunning propagation of the virus all over the country. But when the weight of the human conscience got the upper hand over his priestly obligations, a few hours before his death, he decided to break the Seal of Confession, disclosing the secrets and entrusting them to a publisher who, in turn, decided to make the confessions public, under the title of Welcome to the Kingdom of AIDS.
