Sinopse

The world is emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic, more fragmented and further away from the more equal and equitable iteration imagined in 2015 when the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were conceptualised.
As we hurtle at seemingly lightning speed towards the 2030 deadline to achieve these goals, the urgency is palpable. Although we have certainly strayed further away from the targets, there is still time to act in order to ensure that we inch closer to this vision.
Professor Tshilidzi Marwala paints a stark, and often grim, picture of our current context, one defined by monumental setbacks in the SDGs. Yet, as he carves out each developmental goal and its implications, it is apparent that there are tangible solutions that can be implemented now.
Tshilidzi's assertion that now is the time to act is backed by intricate and actionable data with a simple mission statement: we must heal the future.
He offers a new narrative that addresses how we can translate the latent potential that exists through technology, innovation and Fourth Industrial Revolution approaches to leadership and policy making to deal with, among others, corruption, poverty eradication, joblessness, an education system in crisis, declining economies and food insecurity.
Heal our World is a deep dive into the SDGs, particularly in the African context, and it looks toward securing a future in which our divisions are blurred, and our goals seem almost in reach again.
Tshilidzi Marwala, the author of Heal our World, Leading in the 21st Century and Leadership Lessons from Books I Have Read is the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Johannesburg. From 1 March 2023, he will be the Rector of the United Nations University based in Tokyo, Japan. He was previously Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Johannesburg and Full Professor at the Carl & Emily Fuchs Chair of Systems and Control Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand.
Tshilidzi holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (magna cum laude) from Case Western Reserve University, a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Cambridge and a Post-Doc at Imperial College (London). He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) and the South African Academy of Engineering (SAAE). He is a distinguished member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). His research interests are multidisciplinary and include the theory and application of artificial intelligence to engineering, computer science, finance, social science and medicine.
He has supervised 37 doctoral students. He has also published 23 books on artificial intelligence (one translated into Chinese) and over 300 papers in journals, proceedings, book chapters and magazines. He holds five international patents.

We need effective leaders today more than ever before. In fact, the root cause behind failed businesses and failed governments is usually either a lack of leadership or the presence of destructive or ineffective leadership. In this collection of dissertations on topics relevant to effective leadership, you'll be challenged to think. Along the way, you'll learn how to discover and clarify your mission, vision, and values; learn how to handle difficult people and situations; improve the performance of your people and teams; and communicate with coworkers, customers, and colleagues. You'll also learn about the leadership continuum and its gradations and how to find the action, behavior, or decision that balances as best as possible benefits with costs. Balance is getting something just right. However, since the world is always changing, the sweet spot is always changing too. What was in balance yesterday may not be today. Like riding a bicycle, we constantly need to monitor our positions and make adjustments to compensate for curves and bumps in the road. Make sound decisions, build better teams, communicate more effectively, be appropriately flexible, and be appropriately strong, with the lessons, examples, and insights in Balanced Leadership.

There’s no denying work has changed in the past couple of years. Potentially faster and more than in the previous five or ten years! The rise of remote work, work from home, work from anywhere, telework, work across different time zones and hybrid work (some people here/some there) continues to create change and challenges. What’s one of the best ways to respond and adapt to the changing world of work? It’s to consider not just the work itself … but the WAY it gets done. Consider:?? Do we really need everyone at the same meeting at the same time? (synchronous work)?? Could some people contribute prior to, or after the meeting or begin working on tasks outside of a meeting? (asynchronous work)A growing number of teams and businesses are learning and experiencing the value of deliberately working in sync / async ways. That is, some work is completed synchronously — at the same time with other people; and other elements of work completed asynchronously — at a time and in a way that suits them. ‘Sync Async : Making progress easier in the changing world of work’. In this book you'll read about:?? how, why and when to work in sync and async ways?? tools for creating your team’s sync async strategy?? ways to identify the type of work you prefer ?? techniques to work in more async ways?? how to make daily progress easier — get started on things that have stopped and accelerate things that have slowed. You don’t need to wait for a culture to change or for someone to give you the go ahead on this. You can start working better in both sync and async ways from today. There will always be too much to do and not enough time in which to do it. Putting practical sync async techniques to work can make your work easier … and the rest of life better.

In addition to his groundbreaking contributions to pure economic theory, F. A. Hayek also closely examined the ways in which the knowledge of many individual market participants could culminate in an overall order of economic activity. His attempts to come to terms with the “knowledge problem” thread through his career and comprise the writings collected in the fifteenth volume of the University of Chicago Press’s Collected Works of F. A. Hayek series. The Market and Other Orders brings together more than twenty works spanning almost forty years that consider this question. Consisting of speeches, essays, and lectures, including Hayek’s 1974 Nobel lecture, “The Pretense of Knowledge,” the works in this volume draw on a broad range of perspectives, including the philosophy of science, the physiology of the brain, legal theory, and political philosophy. Taking readers from Hayek’s early development of the idea of spontaneous order in economics through his integration of this insight into political theory and other disciplines, the book culminates with Hayek’s integration of his work on these topics into an overarching social theory that accounts for spontaneous order in the variety of complex systems that Hayek studied throughout his career.Edited by renowned Hayek scholar Bruce Caldwell, who also contributes a masterly introduction that provides biographical and historical context, The Market and Other Orders forms the definitive compilation of Hayek’s work on spontaneous order.

In Digital Impact: The Human Element of AI-Driven Transformation, Steve Lucas, a three-time CEO, discusses how organizations can integrate and automate systems to create incredible outcomes that benefit people. Lucas explains how this becomes possible when businesses solve the ubiquitous problems of digital fragmentation and data complexity, which have become even more pressing with the rise of artificial intelligence.

Using real-world customer stories as examples and writing in nontechnical language, this book shows how organizations are succeeding in missions like providing aid after natural disasters, growing food more sustainably, and ensuring students have access to everything they need on college campuses―all powered by connected technology. Inspiring stories explored in this book include how a chocolate company is working to end child labor in the cocoa-growing process in West Africa; how a well-known charitable organization provides aid and services for people in need; and how a credit union helps members make better financial decisions for their families.

For business leaders across industries, Digital Impact serves as an essential blueprint to unleash an organization's full potential for doing good by digitally transforming its technology architectures through integration and automation.
