Sinopsis

Bournebridge over Troubled Waters’ is a remarkable and unforgettable book. It’s the year 2030 in Bourne Valley town, where the river flows into the English Channel. Hannah and Andy have returned from their secret wedding and honeymoon. It’s a secret because Andy is the local Catholic priest. They return to some exciting news and begin a new adventure running a large dilapidated old vicarage up river in Bournebridge. Continuing with their climate-friendly enterprise development work, that had won Bourne Valley the National Emerald Award, they assemble a motley group of tenants for the vicarage to help them, including farm workers, an ex-professional rugby player, a lawyer and a retired bishop. It’s a roller coaster journey for the next year with community strife and some climate extremes… including a prolonged severe flood. Among the highs are the beginnings of new romances, businesses and sporting successes. This is a story of love and friendship as well as being a fascinating insight into the impact of climate change action and what you can achieve if your passion prevails.

Public defender Julia Geary’s star is rising, and now she’s got her first murder case defending local denizen Ray Belmar in the death of a homeless man. But Julia’s professional and personal challenges are mounting. First, she’s assigned an intern whose arrogance is insufferable. Then, her widowed mother-in-law, whose home Julia and her son Calvin share, announces her plans to re-marry, meaning they’ll have to find a new place to live. And to top things off, Julia’s boss removes her from the case, saying that she’s lost perspective, replacing her with an attorney who advises Ray to plead guilty. Julia can’t shake the suspicion that the murder, and the subsequent killing of a homeless woman, is linked to the death of a state legislator who had been crusading for political reform. With the help of Duck Creek’s homeless community and her old friend, Sheriff’s Deputy Wayne Peterson, she launches her investigation—but then the anonymous threats start pouring in. Just as Julia begins to uncover the ways the system is shockingly stacked against those on the fringes of society, she makes an even more damning discover: someone close to her is harboring a dark secret they are desperate to protect—even if that means silencing Julia once and for all.

***Highly Commended in the Ellipsis Zine Flash Collection Contest***
A mother watches her son grow from a sweet child into a troubled adult...
A jilted lover finds hope one magical evening...
A cobbler breathes life back into a pair of lucky shoes...
Animal Behaviour titles each of its short stories with animal facts, but the experiences they describe are very much human. The cast of characters is diverse but the world they inhabit is universal: one in which all of us will recognise fragments of our own lives in some form, an echo of our shared humanity.
This second edition contains six new stories, unpublished anywhere else.
“Bold in voice, rich in metaphor, daring in approach, Animal Behaviour is a startling debut. In these very short tales, Amanda McLeod demonstrates an uncanny understanding of life and the living. By turns strange, beautiful, aching and transcendent, these stories and the humans how inhabit them will leave their mark on your mind and heart long past the final page. Highly recommended.”
