Summary

Benji is an imaginative eight-year-old boy, living with his parents in a mining village in Nottinghamshire amidst the spoil heaps and chip shops that characterise the last industrially bruised outposts of the Midlands, just before Northern England begins. His family are the eccentric neighbours on a street where all the houses are set on a tilt, slowly subsiding into the excavated space below. Told through Benji's voice and a colourful variety of others over a deeply joyful and strange twelve-month period, it's a story about growing up, the oddness beneath the everyday, what we once believed the future would be, and those times in life when anything seems possible.
1983 is steeped in the distinctive character of a setting far weirder than it might at first appear: from robots living next door, and a school caretaker who is not all he seems, to missing memories and the aliens Benji is certain are trying to abduct him.

  • Tristram Shandy - cover

    Tristram Shandy

    Laurence Sterne

Tristram Shandy by Laurence Sterne is one of the most inventive and unconventional novels in English literature. First published in nine volumes between 1759 and 1767, this groundbreaking work defies traditional storytelling, blending humor, philosophy, satire, and playful experimentation into a narrative unlike any that had come before it.

Presented as the life story of Tristram Shandy, the novel begins with what should be a straightforward autobiographical account. However, from the very first pages, the narrator becomes delightfully sidetracked by digressions, anecdotes, and reflections that delay his own birth for hundreds of pages. Instead of progressing in orderly fashion, the story loops backward and forward in time, introducing readers to a lively cast of eccentric characters whose personalities often overshadow the supposed hero.

At the center of the novel is the Shandy family. Tristram's father, Walter Shandy, is a man of elaborate theories and peculiar philosophies, convinced that names, noses, and timing determine a person's destiny. Uncle Toby, perhaps the most beloved character in the book, is gentle, kind-hearted, and charmingly obsessed with recreating military fortifications from past wars. Through their conversations and obsessions, Sterne crafts both affectionate comedy and subtle social satire.

The novel's structure is famously experimental. Sterne interrupts the narrative with blank pages, marbled pages, diagrams, and playful commentary addressed directly to the reader. These unconventional techniques challenge the idea of what a novel can be, transforming the act of reading into a shared experience between author and audience. The result is a work that feels surprisingly modern despite its eighteenth-century origins.

Beneath its wit and absurdity, Tristram Shandy explores profound themes: the unpredictability of life, the limitations of language, the fragility of human plans, and the joy found in everyday absurdities. Sterne's humor ranges from subtle irony to bold farce, yet it is always underpinned by a deep humanity and compassion for his characters' quirks and vulnerabilities.

Celebrated for its originality and influence, Tristram Shandy has inspired generations of writers with its bold departure from conventional narrative form. It remains a vibrant and entertaining masterpiece that invites readers to embrace digression, delight in eccentricity, and appreciate the comic complexity of human existence.

Power without mercy meets conscience without escape in this relentless tale of moral siege. A brilliant young executive inherits unimaginable wealth and, with it, a silent war declared by an unseen enemy that strikes at random and without warning. Each refusal to submit invites another tragedy somewhere in the city, and every passing week tightens the grip of dread on streets, homes, and hearts alike.
This is a story about responsibility pushed past endurance. Wealth becomes a burden, influence becomes a target, and private decisions echo across an entire society. As authorities scramble and fortunes are poured into desperate countermeasures, the struggle shifts from business and law to guilt and survival. The question is no longer whether one man can withstand the pressure, but whether any individual should bear such a cost alone.
Jack London brings razor-sharp urgency to a world where ideas about power, class, and justice collide with terrifying consequences. The tension never rests. The threats never sleep. And every moment of delay risks another life caught in the crossfire of forces too vast to name and too ruthless to negotiate.
Born in 1876, Jack London rose from poverty to become one of the most widely read and influential American authors of his time. Known for adventure, social critique, and psychological intensity, he explored the extremes of human endurance and the structures that shape society. In this story, his focus turns to modern power and the unseen systems that can both build civilization and tear it apart.

When Caroline Alleyn inherits Wickham Grange, all she wants to do is sell up. There are bad memories there, linked to her childhood as the daughter of a single mother – and to all the other mothers she knew in that house. But her grandmother Frances’s will means that it can’t be sold without the consent of five elderly women, and they all refuse. None of them will tell her why she has to keep a house she doesn’t want. Instead, she is given a stark warning: don’t look for Lizzie Sixpence.

Though Caroline has other worries. Someone is watching her; the house’s elderly tenants are lying to her; and an old man is hoarding mementoes of her past.

    Then she finds the bones.

And Caroline is left with a choice: keep silent, or betray everything her grandmother stood for. Because there is one final secret to be revealed…
