Summary

Timothy Dexter (January 22, 1747 – October 23, 1806) was an American businessman noted for his writing and eccentricity. At age 50, Dexter authored the book A Pickle for the Knowing Ones,in which he complained about politicians, the clergy, and his wife. The book contains 8,847 words and 33,864 letters, but without any punctuation and with unorthodox spelling and capitalization. One section begins:

Ime the first Lord in the younited States of A mercary Now of Newburyport it is the voise of the peopel and I cant Help it and so Let it goue

The first edition was self-published in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1802. Dexter initially distributed his book for free, but it became popular and was reprinted eight times. The second edition was printed in Newburyport in 1805. In the second edition, Dexter responded to complaints about the book's lack of punctuation by adding an extra page of 11 lines of punctuation marks with the instruction that printers and readers could insert them wherever needed—or, in his words, "thay may peper and solt it as they plese".

Still mourning the baby she gave away a year before, and feeling distant from her parents, her old friends, and her church, sixteen-year-old Diane believes she has found a supportive friend and lover in her gynecologist, Dr. Zeus. She confides only in an old acquaintance, Woody, who reserves judgment about the affair even as he tries to keep her from taking the opiates that Dr. Zeus continually prescribes.
Zeus’s marriage deteriorates as his wife, Elena, gradually realizes the depths of her husband’s depravity. But she is still shocked at the psychological damage he is willing to inflict on their twelve-year-old daughter to gain an advantage over her in the divorce proceedings.
The state medical board has suspicions about Dr. Zeus, but the official inquiry inches forward only very slowly. Dave, the new investigator assigned to the case, is jealous of the accomplishments of his wealthy girlfriend. He begins to take shortcuts to bring the investigation to a head and prove to himself that his life is as meaningful as hers.
"A complex, multilayered, and psychologically acute tale about a predatory physician: well done." Kirkus Reviews
"Diane comes across as both real and confused, which is absolutely perfect." The BookLife Prize.

Harry Sinclair Lewis was born on 7th February 1885 in the village of Sauk Centre, Minnesota.
Childhood was lonely. He was ungainly looking—red-headed, tall, overly thin, stricken with acne and somewhat pop-eyed—making friends and meeting girls were difficult for him. At 13 he unsuccessfully absconded from home in an attempt to become a drummer boy in the Spanish-American War.
In late 1902 Lewis left home for the Oberlin Academy in preparation for Yale University. At Oberlin, he developed a religious enthusiasm that ebbed and flowed for his remaining teenage years. The following year he was at Yale but did not receive his degree until 1908, having taken time off to work at Upton Sinclair's cooperative-living colony in Englewood, New Jersey, and to travel to Panama.
Lewis's earliest published creative work—romantic poetry and short sketches—appeared in some Yale magazines, one of which he later became editor of. After graduation Lewis moved location and jobs several times trying to make ends meet whilst writing fiction for publication.
In working for newspapers and publishing houses he developed a knack for churning out short stories for magazines. He also earned money by selling plots to Jack London.
Lewis first published ‘Hike and the Aeroplane’ in 1912 under a pseudonym. A couple of years later his books were rather more serious in tone and by 1930 he was the first American author to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, which was awarded "for his vigorous and graphic art of description and his ability to create, with wit and humor, new types of characters."
Amongst his classics which changed the shape of American fiction were ‘Main Street’, ‘Babbitt’, ‘Arrowsmith’ (for which he received but declined the 1926 Pulitzer Prize), ‘Elmer Gantry’, ‘Dodsworth’ and his prediction of a US fascist dictator in ‘It Can’t Happen Here.’
As well as novels, he wrote numerous short stories, plays and other articles.
Sinclair Lewis died in Rome on 10th January 1951, aged 65, from advanced alcoholism.
