Summary

The Collected Works presents an engrossing exploration of the intellectual and ethical dynamism of the Renaissance era, harmoniously juxtaposing the intricate reflections of William Roper with the thought-provoking legacies of Thomas More. This scholarly compendium draws together writings that traverse diverse literary terrains, from philosophical treatises to nuanced biographical sketches, encapsulating the fervent conversation between early modern humanism and religious devotion. Through an adept blend of styles—including rhetorical prose and incisive argumentation—this anthology transcends the mere historical, offering insights into enduring questions of morality, governance, and human nature. William Roper and Thomas More embody the vital confluence of biographical close-up and broader cultural critique, with their works serving as a prism through which the temperaments of their age come alive. Roper, More's son-in-law, offers a perspective enriched by personal insight, chronicling More's life with critical empathy and intimate detail. In concert, the collection embraces the vibrant discourse of the Renaissance, rendering visible connections to timeless themes such as justice, conscience, and resistance. These complementary voices collectively honor the spirit of inquiry and valorize the courage of upholding one's principles in the face of societal pressures. This anthology is a must-read for those seeking a deeper understanding of Renaissance thought, offering a rare opportunity to engage with the eloquent dialogues between two profound minds. It not only furnishes an educational tapestry of historical insights but also fosters a space for reflection upon the moral challenges that remain relevant today. A timely and eclectic collection from one of the foremost thinkers of our time, "a powerful, penetrating and immensely knowledgeable writer" (The Guardian).

The essays in this collection came about during the unhurried months when one who had traveled incessantly was obliged to stay still, even as events flared on all sides in a world that never stops moving. Wade Davis brings his unique cultural perspective to such varied topics as the demonization of coca, the sacred plant of the Inca; the Great War and the birth of modernity; the British conquest of Everest; the endless conflict in the Middle East; reaching beyond climate fear and trepidation; on the meaning of the sacred. His essay, "The Unraveling of America," first published in Rolling Stone, attracted five million readers and generated 362 million social media impressions. Media interest in the story was sustained over many weeks, with interview requests coming in from twenty-three countries.

The anthropological lens, as Davis demonstrates, reveals what lies beneath the surface of things, allowing us to see, and to seek, the wisdom of the middle way, a perspective of promise and hope that all of the essays in this collection aspire to convey.

Willa Sibert Cather had Welsh ancestry but like her parents Charles and Mary, was born in Virginia, on 7th December 1873. Despite strong roots in the community, Willa was 9, when the family moved to Nebraska, to work the rich soil and avoid TB of which there were numerous outbreaks in Virginia.
The vastness and drama of the Nebraska prairie and its’ extreme weather conditions as well as the many diverse cultures of the local families proved to be a major influence on her and can be evidenced in much of her later writing.
Her first writing was for the local journal when she was at the University of Nebraska and later became the managing editor of the student newspaper.
In 1896 she obtained work for a woman’s magazine in Pittsburgh and soon after became a regular contributor to the Pittsburgh Leader and wrote poetry and short stories for the Library, another local publication.
Her first collection of short stories, ‘The Troll Garden’, was published in 1905 and contains several of her most famous including ‘A Wagner Matinee’ and ‘Paul's Case.’ As a writer Cather was now taking immense strides forward.
Between 1913 and 1918 Cather wrote her Prairie Trilogy: ‘O Pioneers!’, ‘The Song of the Lark’, and ‘My Ántonia’ and in 1922 the Pulitizer Prize was hers for her novel ‘One of Ours’ set during WWI.
Acknowledged as one of America's greatest writers’ further honours flowed. In 1943 she was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The following year Cather received the gold medal for fiction from the National Institute of Arts and Letters.
A determinedly private person, Cather destroyed many old drafts, personal papers, and letters. Her will would also restrict the ability of scholars to quote from personal papers that remained.
On 24th April 1947, Willa Siebert Cather died of a cerebral haemorrhage at her Manhattan home. She was 73.
